Einstein Plays Host For Major Track Meet
Einstein High School will host the 3A West Region track meet on May 13-14, a two-day event that will draw hundreds of athletes and spectators from 11 Montgomery and Frederick county schools.
It's the first time in years that the regional meet has been held at Einstein, which had a dominant track program in the 1970s and 1980s. Einstein was selected after track coach Eric DaSilva and school administrators told regional athletic officials earlier this year they wanted to host the event. A Frederick County school which had the first option to host declined.
"I think it's nice for kids to have a huge meet at their school and to have pride in their school. It's a way to promote the school," said DaSilva, an English teacher who has been Einstein's cross country and track coach for two years. DaSilva was a top cross country runner at his high school, Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax, VA and now runs marathons.
Regional meet competition gets underway Wed., May 13 at 4 p.m. and will continue until about 8 p.m., with the same start and finish times on Thurs., May 14. Tickets for students and adults at the meet will be $5, as set by state athletic officials.
The top four finishers in every regional track and field event, and athletes who meet certain performance standards in their events will qualify for the state championship, scheduled for May 22-23 at Morgan State University in Baltimore.
The schools visiting Einstein for the regional meet include Kennedy, Watkins Mill, Damascus, Bethesda-Chevy Chase, Seneca Valley, Paint Branch and Wheaton from Montgomery County. The Frederick schools are Urbana, Frederick and Tuscarora. Wheaton hosted the 3A West Region meet in 2008.
The upcoming event already has Einstein officials pursuing a list of refurbishment and fix-up projects to get the stadium complex in top shape. They are working with county facilities officials, the Hall of Fame athletic alumni group and the Boosters to repair the school's eight-lane track, improve the stadium press box, replace gates, beautify the grounds and other projects. This work follows a recent $37,000 upgrade of the softball field that was funded by Bethesda Chevy Chase Baseball Inc., a community group that organizes youth baseball leagues.
Hosting the meet "gives us an opportunity to kind of showcase our athletic facilities, which we're very proud of," said Athletic Director Brady Blade.
"It also says we can pull this off and do it," Blade said. "It takes a lot of effort, and a lot of different people."
DaSilva, Blade and other Einstein officials would like students, parents and staff to volunteer to keep events running smoothly, from moving hurdles to measuring long jumps. Students can earn learning service hours for their volunteer work at the meet.
DaSilva said he's hoping for balmy spring weather, as well as good performances by Einstein athletes and no mishaps at the big event. But another result he's aiming for is that "anybody who comes here sees all that is good and right about Einstein and that there are no negative issues."
