MCPS Championships
Titans Swim Strong at County Champs
For the first time in several years, Einstein had enough divers and swimmers for every event of the three-day Montgomery County Swimming and Diving Championships at the Martin Luther King Swim Center. On Thursday, Feb. 18, sophomore Zeke Gonzales, freshman Joe Ferrin, seniors Phoebe McDermott and Arielle Gantt participated in the 500-yard freestyle events. Friday, Feb. 19, senior Andrew Turow, freshman Nick Simpson, sophomore Jordan Coyne and McDermott jumped from the boards in the diving competition. The swimming events were held Saturday, Feb. 20, with each public school entering two swimmers per event.
The county's public schools are divided into four divisions. Division 1 schools have significant depth (75 or more on the team), and a bulk of year-round club swimmers, as do some Division II and III teams. The smaller school teams tend to be in Division IV. Einstein, a very small D IV team, started the meet with its signature Go Titans cheer led by Coach Nick Kaufman, and never stopped cheering for Titan teammates throughout the entire meet. The majority of our swimmers equaled or bested their seed times. Scoring for the Titans came from the girls 200-yard medley relay, comprised of seniors Stephanie Pratt, Meredith Giblin, Natalie Daronco and freshman Carol Anderson. Senior Glenn Pastel had a superb best time in the 100-yard breast stroke and posted the only points for our boys team. The same quad of girls in the medley relay closed the meet in the 400-yard freestyle relay in a close finish with Springbrook (D IV), which out-touched the Titans by .41 seconds.
During the halftime break, division championship trophies were awarded, and the energetic and excited Titan team accepted the Division IV trophy.
Whitman (D I) won the championship for combined totals by the strong performance of their girls team which placed first, followed by Churchill (D 1), Sherwood (D II), Walter Johnson (D I), and Wootton (D I). Wootton's boys claimed the first place finish with a deep roster of juniors and underclassmen.
Next weekend is the Washington Metropolitan Swimming and Diving Championships, which include both public and private schools. Einstein has several swimmers entered.

Both teams were standing and cheering their swimmers on as they swam the last leg of the event's 20 pool lengths neck and neck. It came down to the times on the watches of the three lane timers -- Ferrin finished fourth, but his teammate freshman Zeke Gonzales placed third in the event. Gonzales also placed second in the 200-yard freestyle.

Sophomore Zoe Goozner has developed into a butterflier and placed first for the Titans in the 100-yard butterfly event.
The women's medley relay came down to the last five yards of the race, with the Watkins Mill swimmer putting her head down and punching the wall in Michael Phelps-like fashion to win for the Wolverines.
Einstein's men swimmers made a strong showing despite the fact that the county jazz band competition thinned the ranks of their team.
Senior Michael Bowrin was a double first-place finisher in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events, and sophomore Ryan Keating placed first for the Titans in the 200-yard individual medley. Junior Glenn Pastel and Titan musician sent his mother home from the jazz band competition for his swim suit, and made it to the pool in time to compete in and win the 100-yard breaststroke event, posting points that the Titans thought they would not receive.
