Football Helps Kelson Patterson Think Big

Kelson Patterson always wanted to play high school football, but a back injury in ninth grade put that dream on hold. He was a junior before doctors gave the all-clear and he suited up in football pads.
Patterson's size -- 6'5" and 285 lbs. -- and an unflagging determination helped him quickly establish a presence in two years of playing for the Einstein football team on the offensive line and as a defensive tackle.
College coaches took notice, and on Feb. 4, Patterson signed a letter of intent to play football at the University of Rhode Island, a Division 1 AA school with an undergraduate enrollment of 13,000 in Kingston. Patterson is the first Titan player in more than 40 years to earn a full Division 1 football scholarship straight out of high school, according to his Einstein coach.
"It doesn't get any bigger than that," said Titan head coach Mike Bonavia.
When Patterson first came out for the JV team in 2007, even Bonavia had to be convinced that the hulking teenager could become a player.
"He wasn't this dominant force," said Bonavia, who's headed the football program at Einstein for three years. "He had a lot of off-season work he had to do as far as his body. He did it better than anybody I've seen."
Patterson's mother Janette said her son staged a "remarkable recovery" after fearing that his back injury would keep him from playing the sport he loved.
"He really earned his success," she said.
Patterson was one of the team's captains last fall and was the gap-buster on the offensive line, clearing the way for Titan running backs as the team compiled a 5-5 record, its best effort in eight years. He was recognized as a stand-out player by The Washington Post and Gazette Newspapers, and received the team's Most Improved award.
In addition, Patterson's solid academic performance was a selling point as Bonavia put Patterson's name out to college coaches around the country.
Bonavia told coaches that Patterson "has made this total transformation. This guy is ready." The senior has gotten even bigger, now tipping the scales at 300 lbs. and reaching 6'6".
The University of New Hampshire and the University of Richmond, also Division 1 AA, showed interest in Patterson. Then last month he visited the University of Rhode Island, where head coach Darren Rizzi is in his second year and is rebuilding a program that had a 3-9 record last fall.
"It felt right," said Patterson. "I liked the vibe there. I got along with the guys on the team and the coaches."
At 7 a.m. on Feb. 4, Patterson gathered with his family, coach and Einstein administrators in the school's Hall of Fame room, dedicated to top Titan athletes of the past.
He wore a blue and white Rhody Rams cap as he signed his letter of intent, joining 15 other high school players from the eastern U.S. who comprise Rizzi's 2009 recruiting class.
Patterson's already talking like a Ram.
"I don't doubt that we're going to win a championship ring at Rhode Island," he said.

Washington Post, Gazette Honor Titan Players

Sophomore running back Malcolm Crockett and senior offensive lineman Kelson Patterson have been named by sportswriters as among the best high school football players in the region this fall by The Washington Post and Gazette Newspapers.
Seniors Bryan Martinez and Terrence Love also were recognized, along with Crockett and Patterson, in the All-League Teams chosen by area coaches in conjunction with The Post and published Dec. 17 in the newspaper's Sports section.
The players' recognition follows Einstein's 5-5 football season, its best since 2000.
"It's huge to have these guys in The Washington Post as an award," said head football coach Mike Bonavia. "You know how much of an impact it's having."
Crockett, Montgomery County's leading rusher with a season total of 1,506 yards and 15 touchdowns, was listed three times in The Post. He received an Honorable Mention among players in the greater Washington area, including Virginia, the District of Columbia and Maryland, in the paper's Fall All-Met section, selected by the paper's high school sports staff. He also was listed as a running back in Montgomery County's 3A Division All-League Team, chosen by coaches in that division along with the paper's sportswriters and published in The Post. In The Post's Dec. 18 Montgomery Extra section, Crockett was named by the section's sportswriters to its All-Extra team.
The 3A All-League Team also included Patterson on the offensive line, Love for his work on kick returns and Martinez as a linebacker on defense. They join players from Seneca Valley, Paint Branch, Damascus and Watkins Mill, among other schools.
In the weekly Gazette, Crockett was named by the paper's sports staff to the All-Gazette Football, 1st Team Offense for the county, and his photo appears in the Gazette, along with players from Seneca Valley, Sherwood, Damascus and Good Counsel. Patterson was named by Gazette sportswriters to the Second Team as a "big college prospect" who "paved Crockett's way."
Bonavia said media recognition of Titan players brings college recruiters calling from around the East Coast. These players, he said, "are doing things that winning programs start to do. People are recognizing it."
What's more, he said, the attention will be an incentive for Einstein's returning football players.
"I can promise you we'll be competitive," he said. "I think these guys will have that interest and try to take it to another level."
