Titans Miss At Foul Line Against Kennedy

Poor free-throw shooting did in the Einstein boys varsity basketball team Tuesday evening, in a 52-46 loss at Kennedy.
The Titans converted just 17 of 31 shots from the charity stripe, while the Cavaliers made 18 of 19 free throws.
Einstein led after the first quarter, 10-9, but then fell behind by two at the half, 20-18. Kennedy opened up a 9-point lead after three quarters, 36-27. To begin the fourth quarter, the Titans missed seven straight free throw attempts.

Titans Stumble Against Northwood

Einstein varsity boys suffered a 72-47 loss to Northwood Friday evening, spoiling a strong offensive performance by senior Deandre Frye (21 points) and a fine three-point shooting exhibition by junior Tony Termini (12 points, all from behind the arc).
The Titans surrendered the first five points of the game, but battled back to tie it up at 12-all early in the second quarter, when Frye was fouled on a shot and made one of two free throws. Einstein was down by six at the half, 31-25.
Frye scored 8 of the Titans' 10 points in the third quarter, and he and Termini accounted for all of Einstein's fourth-quarter points. But Northwood consistently widened its lead and pulled away in the final minutes, scoring the last 12 points of the game.
Junior Kwame Asante and sophomore Miles Jackson each added 4 points, as did freshman Aram Martin, playing in just his second game for the varsity squad. Junior Nick McMillan had 2 points.
Up next for Einstein is an away game at Kennedy on Jan. 13. Tipoff is at 5:15 p.m.

Titans Foul Out Against B-CC

The Titans boys varsity basketball team lost to the B-CC Barons Monday night, 73-42, in a game where five Einstein players fouled out.
Einstein started the contest with three players in street clothes. Then, in the first quarter, starting point guard Ryan Toledo went down wtih a nasty gash below the right eye; he did not return. When five Titans reached the maximum limit of five personal fouls apiece, Coach Ken Bunker was down to his final five players to finish the game.
It was a tight contest in the beginning, with the Barons leading 14-9 at the end of the first period. Einstein scored the first basket in the second quarter and pulled to within three points. The Titans, however, did not score again in the quarter, trailing 27-11 at intermission.
Einstein battled back in the third period, led by the three-point shooting of junior Tony Termini (6 points) and sophomore Miles Jackson. At the end of the third quarter, the Barons' lead was cut to eight, 41-33.
Things quickly got out of hand in the fourth quarter, as numerous Titan fouls sent the Barons to the line 17 times in the period -- more times than Einstein visited the charity stripe for the entire contest. B-CC outscored Einstein 32-9 in the fourth quarter.
The Titans were led by Jackson's 16 points. Junior guard Nick McMillan added 10 points. Junior Kwame Asante had 8 points, and sophomore Charlie McGrady chipped in 2 points to round out the Titan scoring.
The varsity team plays on Jan. 9 at home against Northwood at 5:15 p.m. JV tips off at Northwood at 3:30 p.m.

Titans Topple Wheaton

Einstein's boys varsity basketball team claimed its first victory of the season Monday night, with a thrilling, come-from-behind surge to beat crosstown rival Wheaton 45-43.
After scoring the game's first basket, Einstein fell behind, trailing by as many as 9 points in the first half. Nevertheless, Titan Coach Ken Bunker persisted with a slowdown, spread offense to pull Wheaton out of its game plan. Einstein trailed at the half 25-20, and then was down by one point at the end of the third period, 31-30.
With just 16 seconds remaining, a steal by senior Deandre Frye and a basket by junior Nick McMillan tied the contest at 43 all. Then, after another steal -- the Titans' fourth in the game's final minute -- sophomore Andrew Sheffield hit the game-winning shot with just 2.5 seconds left on the clock. After trading timeouts, the teams returned to the court for one final play, but the Knights were unable to score at the buzzer, lifting Einstein to 1-5 on the season.
Frey lead all scorers with 21 points. Junior Ryan Toledo returned from a two-game absence with 11 points. McMillan added 6 for the Titans. Sheffield's jumper from the right side in transition, with the clock ticking down, were his only points of the game.
The boys JV squad, playing at Wheaton, also won.

Eight Titans put points on the board, led by junior Nick McMillan's 20 points, 17 of which came in the second half. Einstein vs Paint Branch JV (away) 3:30 p.m. / V (home) 5:15 p.m.

Titans Charge Paint Branch Panthers

If Tuesday night's boys varsity home game against the Paint Branch Panthers proves anything, it's that this year's Titans have the potential to play any team.
Einstein lost to the talented, fifth-ranked Paint Branch squad 68-50, but the Titans had some impressive performances along the way, particularly in the fourth quarter. After falling behind by 24 points, Einstein came alive with minutes left in the game, thanks in part to a pressing full-court defense.
In a minute-and-a-half, junior Kwame Asante nailed two three-pointers, sophomore Miles Jackson added another, and sophomore Stephen Powell had a steal and then made a lay-up while being fouled. Powell then completed a traditional three-point play with a converted free throw. Einstein was on its way to a 13-4 run, closing the gap to 53-40 with about five minutes left to play.
After Paint Branch scored a pair of baskets, Einstein went on another rampage, scoring eight straight points, including another three-pointer from Asante and a steal and lay-up by junior Nick McMillan. That run would bring Einstein to within nine points at 57-48. But Paint Branch held tough, pulling away in the final three minutes of the contest.
Einstein was led by Jackson's 23 points. Asante hit for 12.
The Titans take on Watkins Mill this Friday at home. Tipoff is at 5:15 p.m. for JV, 7 p.m. for varsity.

Titans Test Rams

The Titan boys varsity basketball team played a scrappy game Friday night, but fell in overtime to the Rockville Rams, 66-58. The loss put the Titans at 0-3 and still looking for their first win of the season.
Einstein drew first blood in the hard-fought contest on sophomore Miles Jackson's turnaround in the paint. The lead was one of three during the game for the Titans.
After trailing by as much as 12 points late in the first half, Einstein ratcheted up the pressure in the second half, catching the Rams at 52-all on a three-point play by point guard Ryan Toledo with just under four minutes left in the game.  Einstein then went up by two points after Jackson converted both free throws following a foul by Rockville.
Einstein outscored the Rams 12-6 in the final period, with all six of Rockville's points coming at the charity stripe. Rockville was unable to convert a single field goal in the fourth quarter. With two minutes to go, Einstein had a 56-54 lead, but Rockville scored the final two points of regulation to knot it up.
Free throws won the game for Rockville in the overtime period. After the teams traded baskets, the score stood at 58-58 with just over a minute remaining. Einstein would go scoreless the rest of the way, and Rockville tallied the game's final eight points at the free throw line. For the game, Rockville made good on 20 of its 22 free throws, and was perfect at the foul line in the fourth quarter and overtime. The Titans were 12 of 16.
Jackson and senior Deandre Frey scored 15 points each for Einstein. Nick McMillan added 14 before fouling out.
Einstein's JV squad pulled out a 50-43 win the opening game of the Rockville doubleheader.

Titans bitten by Bulldogs

The Einstein boys varsity basketball team lost its second game of the season Tuesday night, falling to Churchill, 65-42.
The Titans started out strong on the Bulldog court, taking a 9-5 lead midway through the first period. But Churchill's trapping defense led to numerous Einstein turnovers in the second quarter, and the Bulldogs went on a 20-4 run, threatening to blow the game wide open. At halftime, Churchill led 34-17.
The two teams traded baskets in the third period, and Einstein looked ready to charge as the fourth quarter started. After sophomore Miles Jackson was fouled and made both free throws with five minutes to play, Einstein pulled within 11 points, 51-40. But the Titan sharpshooters went cold the rest of the way, and Churchill coasted to a 65-42 win.
Einstein was led by senior Deandre Frye's 10 points. Jackson added 9. Junior point guard Ryan Toledo tallied 6 points, and juniors Nicky McMillan and Kwame Asante had 4 each.
Playing earlier in the evening, the Einstein JV boys also faced a tough Churchill squad and lost.
Einstein's next action on the hardcourt comes Friday, Dec. 12, at Rockville. The JV squad tips off at 5:15 p.m., and the varsity follows at 7 p.m.

Einstein vs Blair JV 5:15 p.m. / V 7 p.m.

Einstein Loses Steam in Second Half

The Titan varsity boys basketball team started out strong in its season opener against Blair High School but lost its momentum, allowing the more poised Blazers to seize control of the contest and take home a 67-47 win.
It was a close-fought, see-saw game at the start. At halftime, the Blazers had a slim 3-point lead, 30-27. But the Titans left their game in the locker room during the second half, missing shots and rebounds while failing to penetrate the tightening Blazer defense. At the end of three quarters, Einstein trailed 50-41.
The Blazers owned the fourth quarter, and with three-and-a-half minutes left in the game, they put up a 20-point lead, 61-41. The Titans tried to close the gap, but didn't get close.
Leading scorers for the Titans were senior Deandre Frye and junior Ryan Toledo with 10 each, sophomores Andrew Sheffield and Miles Jackson with 8 each, junior Nick McMillan with 7 points and senior Kelson Patterson with 4 points.
In other action, the Einstein boys JV basketball team won its game against Blair, 42-33. Leading scorers for the Titans were sophomore Patrick Mustamu with 13 points, and sophomore Leo Briceno with 12 points.
