Cosmetology, the science of personal beauty care, is a three-year program totaling 1,500 hours of instruction. Satisfactory completion allows the student to take the Maryland State examination for an operator's license. Practical instruction includes manicuring, shampooing, facials, skin care, hair styling, thermal styling, precision hair shaping, hair coloring, chemical permanent waving, and chemical relaxing. Theory instruction emphasizes professional ethics; hygiene; sanitation; chemistry; bacteriology; anatomy; physiology; histology of the hair, skin, and nails; elements of design; and salon management.

    • Hairstyling with rollers, pin curls, pressing combs, thermal irons, and round brushing
    • Hair cutting and hair coloring
    • Conditioning and chemical relaxing
    • Artifical hair and wig styling
    • Massge: head, face, hand, feet, legs
    • Removing unwanted hair
    • Organizational skills are imperative: students must take initiative to move from task to task upon completion, with the equipment needed to perform each task easy to locate and use
    • Ability to follow multi-step written directions (sometimes more than 30 steps) and internalize the process for recall without the written help
    • Extensive memorization skills needed for long term recall of both vocabulary, (much of it scientific), processes, and state board test items
    • Ability to read and comprehend textbook written at 12th grade-college level due to anatomical and chemical terms
    • Ability to stand for long periods of time
    • Math skills needed for ratio/proportions, elapsed time and liquid measurement skills
    • Good oral communication skills for working directly with clients
    • Very good attendance (no more then 4 days absent per semester)
    • Maintaining a "C" or above average in science laboratory class
    • A professional attitude
    • A strong desire to give services to others
    • Skills or an open mind to learn and master techniques
    • A three year commitment to completing the program with the required 500 hours per year
    • After successful completion of Cosmetology I, students are prepared for employment as a shampoo assistant.
    • After successful completion of Cosmetology II, students are prepared for employment as a salon technician.
    • A summer on-the-job-training (OJT) program where students earn a salary and up to one and a half OJT credits is available after the first year.
    • Students may also apply for the Cosmetology Work-Study Training after successfully completing 1,000 hours of instruction, enabling them to earn extra hours and work experience toward their licensing exam.
