Foundations of Building and Construction Technology (BCT)is a one-semester program in which students begin to develop skills in a variety of construction areas that include carpentry; electricity; heating, venting and air conditioning (HVAC); Masonry; and plumbing. Building Construction Trades uses the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) curriculum. This is a nationally accredited, competency-based construction-training program. Each module has both written and performance assessments. Successful completion of all six modules provides NCCER certification. This curriculum ties textbook information with han ds-on proficiencies. Students learn to read and interpret blue-prints, proper building construction techniques, and methods to design, lay out, build, and repair residential utility systems. Students also learn how to estimate the amount of materials needed for the completion of various installations and repairs. Math and science concepts are applied as students calculate costs of materials and correct utility sizes. Upon completion of this class, students will choose a construction program to focus their remaining training.
