Black-Eyed Susan Book Award

The purpose of the Black-Eyed Susan (BES) Book Award is to promote literacy and lifelong reading habits by encouraging students to read quality, contemporary literature. For more information about the Black-Eyed Susan Book Award, visit the Maryland Association of School Librarians' web site.
During the school year, students must read a certain number of Black-Eyed Susan books in order to vote on the best BES book for the year. When the required number of books have been read (8 in the Picture Book category or 3 Grade 4-6 Books), the student will cast one vote for the book he or she considers to be the most outstanding in that category. Votes from across the state are tallied by the BES Committee to determine the winners. The winning authors and/or illustrators receive a pewter plate engraved with the year and the Black-Eyed Susan Book Award logo. Authors, illustrators and publishers recognize the award as an honor bestowed by Maryland students.
The title and author of the winning books in each category are in bold.
