The kindergarten classes at Dufief just enjoyed their first in-school field trip of the year. Led by parent volunteer Hanna Cohen, all three kindergarten classes had a great experience learning about apples! With many parent volunteers assisting, the students had a chance to visit four different apple stations. Masterpieces were created at the Apple Printing table. The children used real apple "stamps" to create patterns, sequences and all kinds of pictures. The pictures will be great fall decorations. At the Apple Tasting table the children sampled four different types of apples and rated them on taste, texture and color. Once their ratings were tallied it was clear each child had a winner. It was hard to pick a favorite with lots of Gala, Granny Smith, Macintosh and Red Delicious on hand to sample. Seeds were the next subject of interest as children at the "Apples are a Fruit" table compared apple seeds to all kinds of various fruit seeds using a magnifying class to a close-up look. Then the children answered questions about seeds in their books as a volunteer read the book, We Love Fruit. The last stop, the Apple Press, was fun for all. Each child took a turn placing two apples in the grinder and turning the grinder wheel. Then they all watched as the pomace was pressed and then the cider was squeezed out of the pomace into the collecting bucket. Each child got to sample the cider they helped make once it was pasteurized and brought back to the classes to taste. This first kindergarten event was a great success as indicated by the number of laughs, smiles, questions and answers taking place all throughout the day. about apples! |
