Accelerated, Double Period Literacy and Mathematics
Courses Students entering downcounty high schools two or more grades
behind in literacy and/or mathematics will be enrolled in a special
double period class, specifically designed to accelerate their learning
in these two important areas.
Connections, a Freshman Seminar
Students in each high school will take a one-semester course that has
been custom designed by downcounty high school teachers to ease the
transition of students from middle school to high school, introduce
students to career and higher education opportunities, and prepare students
to choose a program of studies for the remainder of their high school
years.
Smaller Learning Communities
Reflecting the most recent research, the high schools of the downcounty
region have chosen to organize their reform effort around the creation
of smaller learning communities within these large high schools, intending
to create greater connections between teachers and students and a more
personalized school environment.
Dedicated Faculty To as large a degree as possible,
the academies of the downcounty will be organized around a common core
of teachers who will remain with their students for the final three
years of high school.
Connections to Higher Education Each of the academies within
the four high schools of the downcounty will be connected to higher
education partners who can support that academy and provide post-secondary
linkages to teachers and students.
Connections to Business Partners Through the efforts of MCBRE,
each academy in the downcounty will be connected with business partners
who will support expanded
learning opportunities for students and teachers, assist in program
development, and provide linkages to the work force.
Internship and Mentorship Opportunities One of the cornerstones
of this reform effort is the creation and support of internship opportunities
for students and teachers, both within the business community and the
higher education community.
