Some general guiding principles toward which the curriculum aims:
|
Targets whole child to produce a globally minded citizen of the future who can think critically, solve problems and take action. |
Inquiry based approach where students question, do research,
and construct meaning for themselves
• Use of manipulative and hands-on materials
|
Themes are global and transferable
• Specifics about the United States or a particular state is taught as a “case study” within the larger idea.
• Ex. Revolutionary War is taught within a unit on revolution and change. Key concepts are taught through the American revolution, then applied to revolutions around world in the past and present.
• Unit of Inquiry on Ecosystems will teach concepts through the Chesapeake Bay “case study”, but then apply their knowledge to other water ways around the world.
|
Connect closely with state and county science and Social Studies outcomes
• Utilized MCPS Social Studies curriculum guide as a resource when developing PYP units of inquiry.
• Uses resources and lesson ideas from MCPS science kits when applicable.
• 2 units of Inquiry based around S.S. outcomes, and 2 based around science
|
One unit of inquiry directly relates to the MCPS reading curriculum
• Will utilize William and Mary, Junior Great Books and MCPS grade level core books to design this unit.
|
All units reinforce reading and writing skills
• Expository text and primary source materials utilized.
|
2-3 assessments are designed per unit
• Once outcomes, central idea and inquiries into are determined, then assessments are created
• Designed to assess the central idea (Enduring understanding), align with curriculum
• Can model form after state and local assessments
• Final assessment should be performance based where students must think critically and apply what they have learned in a new authentic situation.
