Chinese Immersion Enrollment Guidelines

Chinese Immersion Program at College Gardens Elementary School
Available to all Montgomery County students in Grades K thru 5
for the 2009–20010 school year.

In Kindergarten

  • Younger siblings of any child currently enrolled in the program will have preference.
  • Following the kindergarten orientation in the spring should demand exceed available space; the appropriate field office will coordinate the lottery.
  • If a lottery is conducted, the school will maintain any waiting list until April 1, 2010.

In First, Second and Third Grade

  • Available seats will be determined by the allocation determined by the school budget process (maximum capacity-25 seats, pending final budget)
  • CGES rising Grade1, Grade 2, Grade 3 and Grade 4 students not in the program, access
    the program by filling out an application with the school by April 1, 2009. Students
    in second grade and above who are new to the program next year will take a Chinese proficiency test.
  • Currently enrolled Chinese Immersion students are automatically enrolled in the next grades CI class at CGES.
  • Should demand exceed available space, the appropriate field office will provide technical assistance for a lottery.
  • If a lottery is conducted for students, the school will maintain the waiting list until January 1, 2010. A copy of this list will be provided to the field office supervisor.

MCPS Student Transfer Application Season February 1 Through April 1

MCPS parents who wish to request a change in school assignment for their children from their home school may begin the process during the upcoming transfer season, which will be held from February 1 through April 1, 2009.

 Assignment changes of students from one school to another are permitted under the following circumstances:

  • Older sibling in the requested school 
  • A documented hardship situation

The transfer process begins at the home school, where parents may request an assignment change form and an information booklet that describes the process and provides useful information. Assignment change forms and the Change in School Assignment Information Booklet will be in schools beginning the first week of February and on the school system web site at www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org. Every effort will be made to notify parents of the assignment decision by May 15, 2009.
