| Students in Mrs. Fairbairn's classes participate annually in Living Classrooms sponsored shad restoration project, a local environmetnal success story. Students hatch shad eggs in the classroom and return the fry to the Potomac River, helping to restore the once-depleted shad population to the local environment. Shad are one of the major food sources for dolphins, eagles, osprey, and other species. They were once an important food source for Native Americans and colonists. Legend supports the legend that the shad run saved the troops at Valley Forge from starvation and dissolution during the Revolutionary War. |
