Alternative Programs
EXCELLS
The EXCELS Program of Winston Churchill High School gives students access to guidance and support that will enhance their academic success and personal growth. Students in the Churchill EXCELS program will meet with their mentors once per week for 10-15 minutes during the lunch hour to discuss ways that the student can utilize support structures within the school. Occasionally, there will be group meetings during lunch to hear from guest speakers and to provide a forum for students to get to know one another. Mentors will help students develop habits and belief systems which are correlated with academic success.
Goals
- To provide students with a caring adult who encourages them to succeed.
- To increase student self-advocacy.
- To reduce the percentage of academically ineligible* students by providing students with encouragement and academic support.
*Academic ineligibility is determined on a quarterly basis. Students who are academically ineligible have a GPA below 2.0 or have earned more than one E during a marking period. (As a result these students are not allowed to participate in any school sports teams or clubs.)
