In this part of the WebQuest, you will be designing a cartouche, an oval or oblong ornament, with your name written on it in hieroglyphics. Follow the directions to design your cartouche.

 

Scroll down to "See Your Name in Hieroglyphics."

Where it says, "Translate this," type in your name as you would like to see it on your cartouche.

Ask an adult for permission to print your cartouche.

 

Translator

Scroll down so that you can see the alphabet.

Using the alphabet "buttons," type in your name as it appears on your cartouche.

 

1. Compare the hieroglyphs in this "alphabet" with the hieroglyphs on your cartouche. What do you notice?

2. Click on "clear" to erase your name.

3. Now, type a message to a friend in this class.

4. Ask an adult for permission to print your message. Use a black marker to blacken out the letters, or cut them off. Trade messages with a friend. Use the translator to see if you can translate your friend's message.
