ABSENCES: Daily, consistent, and prompt attendance creates school success and develops habits that lead to success in the workplace. We urge you to make school attendance a priority and to schedule vacations (and appointments, when possible) around the school calendar. Please call the office before 9:00AM when your child will be absent. For safety reasons, we call all parents of absent students who have not notified the school. When students return to school Maryland law requires that they bring a note stating the dates of absence and the reason for the absence. We do have an answering machine (301-924-3130) if you need to leave us a message before the office opens in the morning.

TARDY AND HALF-DAY PROCEDURES: Maryland State Department of Education procedures require all schools to keep accurate records of students who are late and/or spend a partial day in school. All students who arrive AFTER 8:50 are considered TARDY. Ideally, students should arrive by 8:40 so that they have time to unpack and prepare themselves for the day. These extra ten minutes make so much difference for a child, especially one who has difficulty with organizational skills. A parent or adult must sign their child in with the attendance secretary in order to get a tardy slip before s/he can be admitted to class. A half-day is considered 8:50-12:25 or 12:35-3:05. Out of School Appointments (Before 3:05 Dismissal): The end of the day is a particularly busy time for teachers, students, and office staff. If possible, schedule out-of-school appointments after 3:05 p.m. When that is not possible, please send a note to the teacher so she can have your child meet you in the office. Parents must sign their child out when they leave school and sign in when they return. Also, please do not call the office with last-minute dismissal instructions after 2:30. We avoid interrupting teachers at the end of the day because of the disruption to closing activities. Thanks in advance for your help.

ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL - School Hours are 8:50 AM - 3:05 PM.
No students should arrive before 8:20 a.m. since there are no teachers on duty until that time. Students line up on the blacktop in good weather and in the All-Purpose Room in inclement weather. All students should be ready to enter the building at 8:40 when the first bell rings. The second bell rings at 8:50 a.m. to signal the beginning of the instructional day. At dismissal, parents should plan to meet children at the outside classroom doors. Siblings should also wait outside either at the bus or at a designated meeting place. Please do not meet your child inside the building. Please be sure that your children come dressed with coats, gloves, boots, and shoes, appropriate for the weather. We do have outside line up and outdoor recess unless it is too wet, muddy, cold (wind chill/temperature below freezing), or otherwise unsafe.

BICYCLES: Students must be in 4th or 5th grade to ride their bicycles to school. They must wear a helmet and must park and lock their bicycles in the bicycle rack. Students should dismount and walk their bicycles when on school grounds. The school is not responsible for loss or damage to bicycles. STUDENTS MAY NOT RIDE: Scooters, skateboards or skates/roller blades.

BUS SAFETY: Parents are responsible for student safety at bus stops, although safety patrols assist. Please review appropriate behavior and safety rules with your child. Students who wish to ride a bus home with a classmate after school must bring a note to the office first thing in the morning. Bus drivers are not allowed to transport additional riders without parent/school permission. For problems concerning bus routes and bus stop locations, call Transportation at 301-670-8274.

CONFERENCES: We believe that regular home/school communication is key to student success. We will call you when we see the need or just want to 'brag' about your children. We hope that you will do the same. A telephone call, note, or e-mail is all that it takes. You can also use your child~s homework assignment book as a convenient way to jot a note to the teacher. We do have formal conference days set up by MCPS in November before the first report card distribution, for every parent to meet and talk with the teacher. As a courtesy, please don't pop in on teachers in the morning or after school. Take the time to set up an appointment or leave a message. We have asked all teachers to return calls, notes, or emails within 24 hours.

DISCIPLINE POLICY: Parents and staff work with our counselor each summer to review and update the discipline policy. Every family will receive a copy of the policy during the first week of school. As always, we ask parents to review the policy with their children, and sign and return a form indicating that the family has discussed the policy. Helping students learn and implement successful conflict resolution strategies is an important part of what we teach, model, and reinforce at Cashell. We expect all our students to work at making good choices, and we need your help in supporting and extending our efforts into the home.

DRESS CODE

A variety of clothing is acceptable throughout MCPS. The exception is clothing which is distracting or disruptive to others at school. Examples include clothing with inappropriate sayings or graphics; revealing or very tight clothing such as tank tops, short shorts or halter tops, or hats or caps worn in the building. We do not want to see bare backs or belly buttons. Students wearing inappropriate items may be asked to do one of the following: turn shirts inside out, put on a sweater or sweatshirt, or call parents for a change of clothing. In all cases, we will notify you so you can help your child make better choices in the future. Fall and spring weather is particularly unpredictable, as are our heating and cooling systems. Dressing in layers at these times of the year is helpful. Please be sure that your children come dressed with coats, gloves, boots, and shoes, appropriate for the weather. We do have outside line up and outdoor recess unless it is too wet, muddy, cold (wind chill/temperature below freezing), or otherwise unsafe.

EMERGENCY INFORMATION CARDS: Please complete all four yellow information cards clearly and accurately. These cards are critically important if we need to contact you in an emergency. Parents MUST let the school office know when any of the information changes. Changes include addresses, telephone numbers, extensions, physicians, dentists, and alternate contact(s) if you can not be reached, as well as changes in custody status.

EMERGENCY SCHOOL CLOSING: In case of weather or other emergencies which make it impossible for schools to open, MCPS broadcasts this information over local radio, television stations and various web sites (the MCPS web site and Schools-Out.com) by 6:00 AM. Please listen to local radio and television stations for updates. DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL.
DELAYED OPENING: When there is snow or other hazardous weather conditions, school may open one or two hours later than usual. Students who ride school buses will be picked up one or two hours later than their regularly scheduled pick-up time on delayed opening days. When schools open two hours late, AM kindergarten is canceled.
EARLY DISMISSAL: When schools close early due to inclement weather, students are dismissed 2 and a half hours early (12:35). Lunch is provided for all students before dismissal. If there is an early closing, children MUST know what they are to do and where they are to go. We will ask you to send a copy of these instructions to us early in the fall. Please review these plans with your children, and notify us if they change. Listen closely to the radio when inclement weather is forecast.
EMERGENCY EVACUATION: In the event that the school must be evacuated for an extended period of time, school buses will transport students to Magruder High School (840-4600).

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT BOOKS: Each student in grades K-5 will receive a designated assignment book for the coming school year. The cost will be $3.00 per book.

INAPPROPRIATE ITEMS FOR SCHOOL: Students should not bring items that can interfere with classroom instruction to school. Examples include gum, radios, CD players, electronic games, trading cards, personal athletic equipment, or any other toys. Parents should monitor the kinds of "toys" that end up in backpacks. You know your own children and their ability to handle distractible items. We will let you know when you may need to come and collect such items. Also, please review the discipline policy, which lists items that are unlawful on school property or at school events.

LICE POLICY HIGHLIGHTS: We will inform parents by letter if there is a case of lice reported to the school or if a case is discovered in a classroom. The school has a no nit policy, meaning that there must be no visible egg cases present in the child~s hair. If a child is sent home with lice or nits, he or she may not return to school for a 24-hour period to give the family time to properly treat the home, the child, and other family members who may require treatment.
The child may not ride the bus back to school after being sent home with lice. Instead, the parent or guardian must bring the child to the health room for a final check before he or she can be admitted to class. County policy requires that the parent also bring proof of treatment; this must be a signed statement and box top from the lice treatment, or, in the case of repeated occurrences, a doctor~s note.

LOST & FOUND: Every attempt is made to reunite clothing, lunch boxes, and other items with their rightful owners. Each year we send several large bags of unclaimed items to Goodwill. PLEASE LABEL EVERYTHING!

LUNCH and BREAKFAST PROGRAMS: Students receive a PIN number and meal costs are deducted from their personal accounts. Students may purchase meals with cash until money is deposited in their accounts. Deposits may be made into students~ accounts by check or money order made payable to Cashell ES Cafeteria. This convenience avoids the daily search for correct change and lost coins; however, it is important to keep money in your child~s account. Students who forget their lunch and have no money in their account will be provided with a cheese or peanut butter sandwich, a drink, and a piece of fruit. Children who participated in the Free and Reduced Meal program last year will continue with the program until the end of September. Guidelines and application forms for free and reduced meals for this school year will be sent home during the month of September. If you believe your child may be eligible for free or reduced meals, please complete and mail the application as directed on the form.

MEDICATION: MCPS and the Health Department forbid the school to administer any medication to a student unless we have written permission. The parent and the physician must complete MCPS Form 525-13, Authorization to Administer Medication, which is available in the school health room. A note from the physician on his/her stationery or prescription pad is also acceptable. Include the child's name, the medication being ordered dosage, time, route of administration, and possible side effects. Also, comply with the following:
The first full day's dosage of any new prescription must be administered at home.
The parent or guardian must bring the medication to school. Students should never bring medication to school.
A pharmacist must properly label medication.
Over the counter medication, e.g.: Tylenol or cough syrup must also be prescribed by the physician, and brought to school by the parent/guardian in the original container with the dosage labeled by the manufacturer and the safety seal intact.
The parent/guardian and health technician (or other designated school staff) must count the medication when it is brought in.

IMMUNIZATIONS: Students entering Pre-K, Kindergarten, and Grades 1,2,3, and 6 will be excluded if they do not provide proof of the required immunizations. The only exception is if written evidence of an appointment with a doctor is provided within 20 calendar days of school entrance. The State of Maryland is strictly monitoring each school's compliance with this regulation.

MONEY: When it is necessary to send money to school for field trips, pictures, etc., place checks and/or cash in a sealed envelope with the child's name, teacher's name, amount enclosed, and intended purpose written on the outside.

SAFETY PATROLS: Mrs. Leber and Mrs. Gurton will be the patrol sponsors and Officer Roth is our police department sponsor. We are fortunate to have excellent school safety patrols that take their job seriously. The safety of all our students is their goal. Please impress upon your children the importance of following patrol instructions.

STUDENT DIRECTORY AND PARENT HANDBOOK: The Cashell Directory will be available in October and includes the Cashell Handbook along with the directory information. The directory information is taken from the yellow emergency cards we ask you to complete the first week of school. If you don't want this information included in the Student Directory, please complete the "Request to Withhold Directory Information" form which will be sent home during the first week of school. (You must return this form by September 17th). This wonderful resource is FREE to PTA members, and can be purchased for a small fee by non-members.

STUDENT SAFETY AND SECURITY: We need everyone's continued help to ensure that all visitors in our building first stop by the office, sign in, and pick up either a volunteer badge or a guest badge to wear while volunteering or visiting in the building or serving as a field trip chaperone. If you need to pick up your child during the school day, drop off forgotten items, or set-up a teacher conference, please stop by the office for assistance. All visitors must clear their visits with the Main Office. Visiting MCPS employees must also wear an identifying badge. Help us keep everyone safe by doing your part to follow these guidelines. Please don~t get annoyed with us when we ask you to follow this procedure.

TELEPHONE CALLS: Teachers and students will be called to the telephone only for extreme emergencies. Students MAY NOT call home for forgotten homework, lunches, instruments, etc. The best time to call teachers is before or after school.
OFFICE NUMBER: 301 - 924 -3130
FAX NUMBER: 301 - 924 -3132

TRAFFIC SAFETY: Student safety must come first! Arrival and dismissal times are accidents waiting to happen, simply because parents do not follow the requested procedures. The safety guidelines pertain to all of us %G–%@ please follow them! The child who is hurt or killed may be yours!

Last year parent volunteers offered to direct traffic and assist patrols in the front driveway for morning drop off. This allowed parents to drive in, drop off their children, and drive out. It worked very well for the most part. In order for this process to continue, we need the following:

Driveway Safety:

  • You may only drive into the main parking lot in the morning. THE BUS LANE IS CLOSED TO ALL TRAFFIC AND PARKING FROM 7:30 AM to 4 PM. That means only BUSES may drive into and/or park in that lane. That means YOU CAN'T--~EVEN FOR JUST A MINUTE!~
  • The entire parking lot is closed from 2:45 - 3:15 p.m. except for buses and staff. During these times, please do not sneak in behind a bus, drive over the cones, or harass the patrols to let you in!
  • During non-cone times, you are welcome to use the front parking lot, but don't park along the front driveway. This is a FIRE LANE as well as a bus lane. See the first bullet. FINES ARE HEFTY!
  • Honor the IN and OUT directions of the front driveway. Enter on the Cherry Valley side of the drive and exit by the fields. Think of ALL the Cashell children when dropping off or picking up your own child.

Walker Safety:

  • The adult crossing guards are on duty at Cashell and Cherry Valley and at Hines and Sandy Knoll from 8:30 to 9:00 and 3:00-3:20. Please plan now for rain and snow gear so students may be protected from the elements while walking or waiting for the bus.
  • Review safety rules with your child regularly.

The decisions you make can affect us all. Do your part to model good safety choices at all times.

VISITORS: Parents are welcome to visit the school. We do ask that you make an appointment with the teacher before your visit as a courtesy and to ensure the visit is at a convenient time. Students may not bring student guests to school. ACCORDING TO MCPS POLICY, ALL VISITORS MUST SIGN IN AND OUT AT THE OFFICE AND LET US KNOW WHY THEY ARE IN THE BUILDING. Approved visitors must wear a VISITOR or VOLUNTEER badge while in the building. PEOPLE WHO HAVE NOT CHECKED IN AT THE OFFICE, AND WHO ARE NOT WEARING A BADGE, WILL BE STOPPED BY STAFF AND SENT TO THE OFFICE TO CHECK IN. We need EVERYBODY to honor these guidelines. Parents who need to pick up their children or meet their children at the end of the day, drop off forgotten items, or speak with a staff member must come by the office. We will be glad to help you. Help us keep everyone safe by doing your part to follow these guidelines when at school. You may know you are a nice person, but to a student or staff member, you are a stranger.

VOLUNTEERS: Volunteers are an integral part of our home/school partnership in education. Parents, grandparents, or community members who are interested in serving as volunteers at Cashell should contact the teacher, office, or PTA Volunteer Coordinators to get more information about how to get started. There are tasks to do at home as well as at school.

Qualifications for volunteers include a genuine interest in children, time to give, a warm and friendly attitude, the ability to work with others in the school, an acceptance of individual differences in students, and an appreciation for all racial and ethnic groups. This year we are asking ALL those who volunteer in the school to participate in a short training session. Please look for more information on this from the Volunteer Coordinator. We ask all volunteers to:

Siblings may not accompany parents when they are serving as volunteers or chaperones. Please make baby-sitting arrangements for preschoolers when volunteering at school. Also, please park on Cherry Valley Drive and NOT in the staff parking lot when chaperoning a field trip

Volunteering can be fun for you and your children. Please find a way to help and get involved.
