Special Events

Winter Wonderland

12/15-12/22

Jump Rope for Heart

1/22

It's magic?

Third through fifth graders will participate in the "Magic Club." The "Magic Club" is an overhand throwing program designed to create a perfect overhand throw and catch. Students progress through a variety of throws and catches off the wall, which get more difficult as a student masters a skill. Students are also required to analyze a peer's skill and be able to tell if they "SLOT." Ask your child what "SLOT" means.

Roll, Toss, throw oh my.

Kindergarteners will be working on their rolling skills. We will focus on facing our target, using one hand to roll the ball, and following through toward our target. First graders will continue the theme of rolling and work on tossing a ball. We will discover that rolling and tossing are exactly the same, except for the point of release. We will focus on facing our target, tick-tock, and stepping with the opposite foot. Second graders will review tossing, and work on overhand throw. We will discover "SLOT". Ask your child to show you "SLOT".

Catch this!

Kindergarten students will learn how to catch a self-tossed ball. First graders will learn how to catch an underhand tossed ball, and second graders will work on catching an overhand thrown ball. We will all focus on watching, reaching and pulling the ball toward us, using just our hands.

Volley up

3rd-5th graders will finish the marking period working on their volleying skills. We will focus on the bump, the set and moving to receive a bump.

Let's jump

Jump Rope for Heart is coming at the end of the semester. All students will work on their jumping skills with short ropes, long ropes, Chinese jump ropes, and jump bands

A look back

Congratulations to everyone who...

Results of the 3rd -5th grade Pacer Test

All 3rd through 5th grade students participated in the "Pacer Test" this marking period. The "Pacer Test" is designed to teach a student how to pace themselves for an endurance run such as a mile run that they will be required to do in middle school. Overall 60% of 3rd through 5th graders were "Super Fit" (above average) or "Fit" (average), and 40% were below average or needing much improvement. The top three runners were 4th grader Ben Truong with 62 laps, 3rd grader Cole Ford with 59 laps, and 3rd grader Daniel Stopak with 58 laps. Whether your child was "Super Fit" or "Below Average" everyone can improve. Encourage your child to go outside and play everyday! We will redo the "Pacer Test" in the spring to see if there has been any improvement in your child's fitness level and endurance.

A note on safety

Just ask a 4th or 5th grader about helmet safety. We all participated in a one week bike and helmet safety lesson. Did you know that most biking accidents happen when a bike is only moving 2 m.p.h.? So, you should always wear your helmet and make sure it fits; a loose helmet is no good. The best place to store your helmet is on your bike so you don't lose it and you don't forget to wear it. Throwing a helmet on the ground is just like getting in an accident with your helmet. You should replace your helmet if you get in an accident, if you have had it for more than 3 years, or if it gets too small. Remember always wear your helmet, be safe, and keep riding!

By Lori Leber

Hi, I am Mrs. Leber

Hi, I am Mrs. Leber, your child's Physical Education teacher. This is my 11th year at Cashell. Since Cashell is such a small school, I am only here Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. On Mondays and Wednesdays I teach at Little Bennett E.S. I look forward to another wonderfully active year with your children. Remember children learn by example. The more you move, the more they will choose to move! Please feel free to come in and join your child during his or her P.E. class!

Please Wear your sneakers!

To be safe in P.E., all children must wear their sneakers to P.E. Due to safety concerns, a student will be asked to sit out of P.E. if he/she does not have on sneakers. Look and see what day you need to wear your sneakers:

Tuesday: Ng, Francis, Baker, Homon
Thursday; Gurton, Duarte, Gannon, Siska, Durham,
Friday; Rosendorf, Siska, Homon, Letina, Ingham, McLean

Let's Move

Pre-K-2nd graders will be working on being SAFE. During this unit we work on movement skills. During movement exploration students develop an understanding of space - how to find their own movement space and how to keep their own space while they move. We learn about dodging and looking for an open space to move into. We also work on locomotor movements such as jump, hop, gallop, slide, and skip. We use these new movements while traveling in different directions (left, right, clockwise, and counter-clockwise), and different pathways (straight, curved and zigzag).

Responsible and Respectful

Third through fifth graders will have the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to be responsible (try their best at all times) and respectful (cooperate with others) during their dance unit. We will focus on working together to complete a task, learn how to support each other, and accept our differences.

Special Events

10/6; Walk to School Day
10/8; 4th and 5th grade Hoedown
10/18 Halloween Young Run go to www.halloweenyoungrun.com
10/26-10/30; 4th and 5th grade bike safety week
11/2; 5th grade Sugarloaf Mountain Hike

Our minds on safety

For the 6th year WABA (Washington Area Bicycle Association) will be donating a trailer of bikes and helmets to our school for one week. During P.E. class 4th and 5th graders will learn about the importance of wearing a helmet and performing an "ABC Quick Check" on their bikes before they ride. Students are encouraged to bring their own helmets for a fitting, but should not bring their own bikes. I do not require students to ride a bike, but they will put on a helmet!

Let's Dance

Students in 4th and 5th grade will be working on their dance skills to get ready to perform for the 9th annual Hoedown. Fourth graders will be working on line dancing and fifth graders will be working on square dancing. This year 3rd graders will be also working on dance in a creative dance unit. Ask your children to show you their dance.

Fitness Components

3rd through 5th graders will discover how to take their heart rate. We will learn how exercise effects our heart rate, and different ways to get our heart rate into our exercise zone. (120 bpm - 200bpm)

When I exercise my body...

Pre-K-2nd graders will be learning what happens to their body when they exercise. We will discover that our heart beats faster, we breathe harder and our skin sweats. Second graders will learn that our heart pumps blood, and our lungs breathe in oxygen.

Pacer Test

This year students in 3rd through 5th grade will take the "Pacer Test." The pacer test is designed to test a student's cardio-respiratory endurance. In the pacer test students are required to jog/run a lap (60 feet from one side of the gym to the other) in a certain amount of time. After 7 laps the time required to do a lap gets shorter for the next 7 laps and so on. This test will illustrate where your child's cardio-respiratory endurance compares to other children his/her age. This test will not be a part of your child's P.E. grade, it is my way to show you whether your child needs to become more active at home.
