Second Grade
by Terri Baker, Susan McLean and Sharyn Bergman
The month of September really flew by for 2nd graders!
We have been very busy in all areas of the curriculum. In reading we have completed our reading 3D assessments and have begun meeting in reading groups. We have rearranged our reading classes to better reflect the results of the 3D assessments.
For our total class lessons we have used the Miss Nelson series of books to focus on character traits, physical traits, feelings, and story structure. After stating a character trait or feeling, the children need to provide evidence from the text to support their responses. Students are then asked to make connections to the text.
Several of our total class lessons have utilized the Promethean Board. The children have been eager to participate in these interactive lessons.
We have been working with contractions in spelling. We will begin compound words as well as words that contain "ch".
The students are expected to write personal experience stories. We are focusing on using the writing process during writer's workshop. Keeping a journal at home is a fun way for the children to keep track of their personal experiences.
Our first unit in math will end this month. Our focus has been numeration and place value. We have looked at various ways to express a number, by writing the standard numeral , expanded notation, the number in words, and using base ten blocks. We have also worked with identifying and creating numeric and nonnumeric patterns. We have explored even and odd numbers as well. Our unit will also focus on graphs, charts, and tables. It is very important for your child to practice his/her basic addition and subtraction facts nightly.
In science we are continuing our balancing and weighing unit. We've discovered that the position of the fulcrum, position of the weights, and the amount of weight affect balance.
In social studies we will continue to work on map skills as we focus on physical features of the United States.
Please be sure to check your child's assignment book and homework folder daily. Thank you for your continued support.
