Cannon Road Elementary School (K-6) opened its doors in the1970's with Mr. James Shumate as the principal. I found it amusing that Cannon Road was still a dirt path on opening day . . . I remember getting stuck in the mud! Clifton Road was the access road to the school. The school filled up quickly with students from all of the new housing around the school. It was exciting watching the community grow up around CRES. It was a wonderful time of growth and that exciting growth continues with new families moving into the Cannon Road community.

Cannon Road has had only a small handful of principals in 30+ years of service, including: James Shumate, Frank Sweeney, Nancy Douglas, Ray Myrtle, Kim Statham, and currently Judy Theiss. We've had several principal interns and a couple of assistant principals over the years.  Each of the principals brought to Cannon Road new insights and directions with only a few changes in the teaching staff. As the years have progressed, not only has the Cannon Road population changed, so have the teachers. Many have retired, some have moved to other schools, and a few have remained to watch Cannon Road continue to blossom with positive changes.

Cannon Road has had two fires in its history. One happened in a storage area which caused some limited damage. The other fire took place in our media center which totally destroyed the media center and resulted in major damage around the building. It was a heartbreaking sight to see Cannon Road so badly damaged. Fortunately, no one was hurt in either fire which took place after the building was closed for the day.  Following the fires, building restoration took place to make CRES as good as new!

The building appears very much like it did 30 years ago with a few exceptions. Our school used to have its name in metal letters across the front, which were finally removed after many years of weather damage. Our school PTA had our old windows replaced with more energy efficient double pane windows. A few changes to selected rooms took place--shelves, electrical modifications, tile replacement, but basically our school retains its original appearance. Few people know that this school was originally designed to have air conditioning. When the county funds ran low, the air conditioning was dropped from the plans. After many years Cannon Road now enjoys air conditioning! The flowers and plants in front of the building have been changed many times over the years, but they always complimented the lovely building and exciting activities which take place inside by loving, caring staff members.
