About this Assignment
In sixth grade social studies classes, student study the patterns of settlement in the ancient and modern worlds in Unit One.
The Social Studies Indicators are as follows:

  • Students will analyze the cultural development of Egypt.

  • Students will analyze the analyze characteristics that are used to organize people into cultures.

  • Students will analyze the relationships among maintaining order under the rule of law,
    protecting individual rights, and providing for the common good.

The students divided into groups to research the eight characteristics of a civilization and examined how each characteristic helped ancient Egyptian society to grow into a stable, prosperous, and impressive civilization. The podcasts below discuss four of these characteristics: physical and geographic characteristics, the social system of ancient Egypt, human geographic characteristics and the political system.
