“What you are now comes from what you have been, and what you will be is what you do now.” About this Assignment Based on the 1950s radio show and modeled after National Public Radio’s segment, “This I Believe…,” these personal credos are a response to a task where students are asked to examine their core beliefs and values as they embark on a new journey-the eighth grade experience. In an exercise of self-reflection, students are asked to consider who or what helped shape them into the young adults they are today. It also acknowledges that beliefs and values are fluid and often subject to one’s varying experiences as he/she navigates through life. This assignment seems particularly relevant in a presidential year when candidates aspiring to the highest office in the American democracy are sharing their visions and hopes for the future of the country; clearly, they, too, are shaped by who they have been, who they are, and who they hope to be.
