The following courses will be offered:
Jumpstart to Middle School (Reading 6 /Writing 6/Math 6) (Cost $270):
This three-week class is for incoming 6th grade students who, with additional mathematics, reading, and writing instruction during the summer, will be prepared for Common Core Math 6 and Advanced English 6 in the fall of 2018. This is a great course to help incoming students acclimate to the middle school environment.
Jumpstart to IM (Cost $270):
This three-week class is for incoming 7th grade students who, with additional mathematics instruction during the summer, will be prepared for Common Core Investigations in Mathematics (IM) in the fall of 2018. This course is designed primarily as a review of the content, concepts, and skills from the Common Core Math 6 curriculum and as a preview of some of the required content, concepts, and skills from Common Core IM. This class is open only to students entering Grade 7 who are enrolled or being considered for enrollment in IM for fall 2018.
Jumpstart to Algebra (Cost $270):
This three-week class is for incoming 8
grade students who, with additional mathematics instruction during the summer, will be able to maximize their potential to be successful in an Algebra 1 class in the fall of 2018. Students in Jumpstart to Algebra should be already enrolled in Algebra 1A for the first semester of the 2018-2019 school year. Jumpstart to Algebra emphasizes concepts and skills necessary for success in Algebra 1. The program reviews content on integers, rational numbers, expressions, and equations. Preview of content from the Algebra 1 curriculum includes variations, quadratics, and monomials/binomials. Conceptual development of concepts, content, and processes is addressed as students are taught concrete understanding through manipulatives, transitioning to pictorial representation, to abstract understanding through paper/pencil problems. Registration priority to this class will be given to students whose IM teachers have recommended they take the course.
Reading/Writing Workshop 7/8 (Cost $270)
: The Reading/Writing Workshop 7/8 class for incoming 7th and 8th graders is a three-week program that will provide reading and writing instruction for students who, with additional reading and writing instruction in the summer, will be prepared for Advanced English 7 or 8 in the fall of 2018. This class will consist of a review of content, concepts, and skills from the 7th and 8th grade curriculum, as well as a preview of the skills of the 7th and 8th grade curriculum students will experience in the 2018-2019 school year.
Jumpstart to Spanish 1/2 (Cost $270):
This three-week class for incoming 6
, and 8
graders invites students to learn Spanish with the academic content of Spanish levels 1 and 2. This includes food and traveling, clothing and shopping, and various other topics. The course will be taught using interactive online material that will include audio, video, games, music, writing and speaking activities. In addition, students will be introduced to Latin American and Spanish cultures by learning dance, cooking traditional dishes, creating art projects, and singing traditional songs in Spanish.
AMC 8 (Cost $200):
course offers preparation for the AMC 8 competition in the fall of 2018. The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. The AMC 8 provides an opportunity for middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment. In this course, we will be practicing similar problems and preparing for this kind of examination. This club is open to any student entering 6th, 7th, or 8th grade.
