A Survivor's Story

On Thursday March 30th, Judy Meisel, a Holocaust survivor visited our school to speak with 7th grade students. Ms. Meisel tours the country sharing her experiences during the Holocaust.

Prior to her visit, students viewed a documentary about Ms. Meisel called "Tak for Alt" ("thank you for everything" in Danish). She learned the phrase from the Lutheran women in Denmark who took her and her sister Rachel in after the war and nursed them back to health. Ms. Meisel said she will always be thankful to the Danish people.

The film was shot in 1998 with Meisel in Europe and the United States. This documentary will be shown on PBS stations nationwide.

Ms. Meisel spoke very frankly about her childhood in Lithuania, time in a concentration camp, liberation and flee to Denmark with her sister. After the war, Ms. Meisel traveled to Toronto, Canada to reunite with her brother. She married and moved with her husband to Philadelphia where they raised their family. Ms. Meisel also spoke about her participation during the American civil rights movement.

Ms. Meisel spent much of the hour answering student questions.

Ms. Meisel is the grandmother of Jennifer, a 7th grade student at CJMS.

Thank you Ms. Meisel for sharing your story with us!
