Press Release from Mrs. Sabatino -November 2, 2009
CJMS Math Team wins BIG at state Math Competition!
On Saturday, October 31st, four Cabin John Math Team members and I went to the Twenty-Fourth Annual Mathalon in Fort Meade, Maryland. The MATHALON is a statewide mathematics competition and all middle schools in the state of Maryland are invited to attend by sending a team of four students to the event. There were over 200 students in 60 teams at the event this year. Seventh grader Agam Mittal and eighth graders Robin Brown, Samuel Han and Huey Hsueh were the CJMS representatives, accompanied by me- their math teacher and coach, Joanna Sabatino.
All four students won big this year, placing in each category they competed in. The Mathalon consists of three rounds of competition: an individual test, a team challenge, and the invention round. Our big winner was 7th grader Agam Mittal, who won First Place in the individual competition, scoring a perfect 30 out of 30. Overall, Cabin John won 5th place as a team, winning a trophy that will be proudly displayed in my classroom.
Our team competed in three different invention challenges. In the House of Cards challenge, Robin and Agam had to build the highest tower possible out of a standard deck of 52 cards. They soared over the competition, wining 5th and 2nd place, respectively. In the Wright Stuff, Samuel “flew” into 4th place by building a glider out of manilla folders and paper clips, while Huey streeeetched himself in the Long Paper Contest and made a strip of paper of over 970 centimeters from a single slice of paper!
This was our first year competing in this event, and I never thought this was possible! I am so proud of what our students have accomplished, and look forward to our MCPS competition in two weeks, and our next State competition in December.
I can’t wait until next year, where Agam can defend his title as Mathalon Champion!
