Should all Students and Teachers Have Laptops?

A Price Estimate
Technology and education just seem to go together. So much so, that some school districts are experimenting with laptops--one school has required all students and teachers to have laptops as part of their school supplies. Is this a good idea?

ASSIGNMENT

1. Discuss with your partner what life would be like at Cabin John if everyone had a laptop/notebook computer. What computer components should the laptops have? Research laptop/notebook computers at Dell Computers, CompUSA and EggHead Web sites. Examine the site to compare brands, prices, and components. Write down the hardware, software and accessories you select.

2. Create an Excel spreadsheet to determine how much it would cost for each student in your school to have a laptop. Remember the spreadsheet needs columns, rows, titles, categories, etc. Write a description of which items you will be selecting. Be sure to include all the teachers and staff (about 90) and approximately 870 students.

3. Obviously everyone would need more than just the computer. Include other expenses that would be involved, i.e. disks, carrying bags, printers, support personnel, software. There is much more, so brainstorm with your partner. Would any current expenses be eliminated?

4. Hand in your spreadsheet with the "grand total." Cougarize your paper and write the filename laptops.xls at the bottom of the page.
