Giants of the Century

The last 100 years has been a period of unparalleled achievements in science, medicine, human rights, and more. In this activity, students will identify key figures in 20th century progress and then document the life and times of each in PowerPoint presentation.

One exciting way to look at history is by studying the people who shaped it. In this activity, you and each of your classmates will choose an individual who made the world a better place during the 20th century. In your presentation, you'll combine information about their lives, accomplishments, and the historical events that influenced their work.

WHAT TO DO:

Step 1 Giant Research

Software: Netscape Navigator

1.Think about the greatest achievements of the 20th century, in any and all fields of human endeavor. Who made them happen? What names come to mind? Thomas Edison? John Lennon? Mother Teresa? Pick a person whose accomplishments you admire most, or who you'd like to learn more about. (No sports figures please).

2. Sign up for the person of your choice on the "sign up" sheet posted in the classroom. This list is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Only one student to each person. NO REPEATS!

3.Using Web resources, research for information and images about the men and women you've chosen. Use the URLs listed below. Request permission to reproduce images if permission is not explicitly given in the source. Cite all sources you use. Use this link to help you write your citations correctly.

Step 2 The Presentation

Software: Microsoft PowerPoint, Netscape Navigator

1.Think about all the important details of this person's life. Plan a slide for each. Your presentation should include a title page with introduction, information about their life (dates, education, family, timeline), accomplishments, and the historical events that influenced their work.

2. What the Presentation Should Include:

Chose an attractive slide presentation template for your background. Stick to one design throughout the presentation. Your presentation should include a minimum of six slides. The presentation must include at least two photographs found in your research. The presentation should also include slide transitions with animation (sound is optional). Insert clipart from MS Office to enhance the presentation. Include the person's name on the footer of the slide master. The filename should be the person's name, i.e. Einstein.ppt
