Step III: Evaluating Different Policies and Laws in
Each State
In this final section of the
lesson, you will research programs and laws in your state and see how
initiatives in your state compare to other states that are combating the
problem of teen drinking. As you read
the information on the various websites we have provided, consider the
following:
·
Does your state
focus on deterrence? The definition of deter is “to prevent or discourage from
acting, as by means of fear or doubt.”
Some states try to deter people from drinking by making the punishments
so severe that teenagers will not drink for fear of the consequences.
·
Does your state
focus on education? Some states try to
educate children and teens regarding the dangers of drinking to make sure they
know the potential consequences. If so,
whom do they target (parents, teenagers, etc.)?
·
Does your state
use another tactic other than deterrence and education? Is it
a treatment program? Is it a program to track the effects of underage
drinking? Something else? Describe it.
Remember, your state may not
have all of the following types of programs or laws and/or the links provided
in this lesson may not give you access to all of the various programs of your
state. Just complete as much as you
can. Remember to bring this worksheet to your youth court coordinator when you
have completed it.

Finally, circle or
highlight the strategies in your notes above that you think are most
effective. If you do not think any of
these strategies are effective, describe what you think would work best on the
back of this paper.
