State Standards MSDE visual arts - essential learner outcomes:

Goal: Student will demonstrate the ability to percieve, interpret and respond to ideas, experiences and the environment through the visual arts.

Expectation: the student will identify , describe and interpret qualities of form that affect visual perception and response.

Indicator of Learning: The student will determine how such factors as light, color, and surface quality can affect perception of the meaning of observed form.

High School Core Learning Goals - MSDE (1998):

Expectation: The student will understand and evaluate the uses of current technologies for a variety of purposes and situations.

Indicator of Learning: The student will use appropriate technologies for research, creativity and problem solving.

Description of Lesson:

Students will observe a still life and create an art work using digital pens and tools found in imaging software.

Document Size

125 dpi

Print size – 9"x7" or 7"x9" or 7"x7"

Terms

Gradation - A series or progression of shades, tints or values, as a sequence of grays from light to dark.

Center of Interest (Focal Point) – The first part of the work to attract the attention of the viewer. The focal point may be established in a variety of ways including having that point be lighter, darker, more detailed, lines leading to it, or isolation.

Rule of Thirds – This design concept is a contrived way of creating dynamic compositions. The picture space is divided into thirds. The points of intersection are ideal locations for placement of the center of interest.

Procedure

Begin by selecting a variety of objects to draw. Choose a minimum of three objects and place them between a pair of students. Arrange the objects and complete a sketch in your sketch book of the objects.

Setup the document to be one of the sizes listed. Set the resolution.

Start the computer image by drawing the outlines of the objects in a very light gray tone using the pencil set to 2B pencil and METHOD as BUILDUP.

Next, fill in the volume of the forms with a series of gradations using the airbrush. Set the size and opacity of the brush to a level you can work with using the CONTROLS palette. Remember to establish a direction of light and to incorporate all objectives.

Save the file as your last name in your account or on your zip disk.
