SPECIAL EVENTS / PROGRAMS

MCPS Career Centers receive information regarding special programs for high school students and parents in the Washington Metropolitan area. We encourage students and parents to explore the opportunities below and to take advantage of these worthwhile events.

CHRIS VAN HOLLEN SERVICE ACADEMY FORUM
Interested 9th, 10th and 11th grade students and their parents are invited to attend the forum on April 18th from 7 - 8:30 pm in the Cafeteria of the Montgomery County Executive Office Building at 101 Monroe Street in Rockville. Representatives from the Air Force Academy, Coast Guard Academy, Merchant Marine Academy, West Point and the Naval Academy will be present. Juniors considering an appointment should be sure to take the ACT or the SAT no later than June 2005.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY NACAC COLLEGE FAIR
Through their high school Counseling Departments later in the spring, MCPS juniors will be invited to attend the Montgomery County College Fair held each year at the Maryland Agriculture Center Fairgrounds in Gaithersburg. The Fair will take place on Wednesday, April 20, 2005 and Thursday, April 21, 2005 from 9:30 AM - 12:45 PM. The fair will also be open on April 20th in the evening from 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM so that parents might return with their students and meet with college admission representatives. 2005 BOYS STATE PROGRAM AT MCDANIEL COLLEGE
The American Legion Boys State Program will be held the week of June 19-25, 2005 at McDaniel College in Westminster, MD. The program's aim is to expose current high school juniors to the U.S. Constitutional form of government and to emphasize the necessity of active participation as a citizen in the government process to insure freedom and rights. Application packets are available in the Career Center. Applications should be filed by April 15 if possible.

SETON HALL UNIVERSITY OPEN HOUSE
Seton Hall University in New Jersey will hold an Open House Program for prospective students on Saturday, May 14th, 2005 at the campus in South Orange. RSVP at admissions.shu.edu or call 800-THE-HALL.

WHEATON VOLUNTEER RESCUE SQUAD SEEKS VOLUNTEERS
The Rescue Squad is seeking high school students 16 years and older who can commit to volunteering at least one night a week. In return, student volunteers will gain medical knowledge and patient care skills, in addition to earning community service hours. Training is provided free of charge. COLLEGE VIDEO FAIR AND FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOP
The Shiloh Baptist Church invites students accompanied by a parent to attend a workshop on Saturday, April 9, 2005 at the Family Life Center, 1510 9th Street, NW, Washington DC from 10 - 2 pm to gain information about the college admission process and obtaining scholarships. TEMPLE UNIVERSITY'S HIGH SCHOOL FILM AND VIDEO FESTIVAL
Temple University will host a Film Festival for young filmakers in grades 9-12 to show their work in front of peers and professionals. Categories are limited to narrative, experimental, documentary, music and video or animation and must be submitted on VHS. There is also a Screenwriting competition for both short and feature-length screen plays. Entry forms can be downloaded at

AMERICAN LEGION GIRLS STATE PROGRAM
Girls State is a free, residential camp for junior girls who are interested in "hands-on" training in the management of a democratic government at city, county, and state levels. The program will take place from June 12-17th at Frostburg State University. Applications are available in the Career Center. The deadline to apply is March 24, 2005.

JESUIT COLLEGE NIGHT IN MARYLAND
Loyola College in Baltimore will be the site of a Jesuit College Night Program on March 17, 2005 from 7 - 9:00 pm for students to learn about the traditions and diversity of Jesuit higher eduction. ALLEGANY COLLEGE OF MARYLAND ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE

MONTGOMERY COLLEGE DISABILITY SUPPORT SERVICES INFORMATION NIGHT
Montgomery College will hold an information night on March 9, 2005 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. for juniors and seniors and their parents to learn about the services offered by DSS for students with disabilities. COLLEGE ACCESS PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES

Are you a graduating seniors interested in finding out about this five-year apprenticeship program with Local Union 669? Sprinkler Fitters are piping mechanics specializing in Fire Protection. Participants accepted into the program receive excellent insurance, pension and education plans all paid for by the employer. An entry-level rate is based on a percentage of the Journeyman rate of $28.35 per hour and will increase every six months. TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY "PREFICS" SUMMER PROGRAM
Tuskegee University invites promising graduating seniors to earn college credit this summer before going to college as a Computer Science major in the fall. The PREFICs Program (Pre-freshman Program in Computer Science) pays tuition and room and board for the summer semester. The Alfred Street Baptist Church HBCU College Festival will held on Saturday, February 19, 2005 from 9:00 AM to 2 PM at 301 S.Alfred Street, Alexandria, VA. Representatives from approximately 30 HBCUs will be available to talk to students and may offer on-site admissions if students come prepared with an official transcript, SAT scores, resume, recent report card and completed college application. UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND OPEN HOUSE FOR JUNIORS
The University of Maryland will host an information session for current juniors on Monday, February 21, 2005 (President's Day) about admission requirements and financial aid. MARYLAND GENERAL ASSEMBLY 2005 STUDENT PAGE PROGRAM
Selected high school seniors will be given the opportunity to participate as pages for members of the Maryland General Assembly during the 2005 season. Pages will serve two nonconsecutive weeks in either the House of Delegates or the State Senate. Each student will receive a stipend of $44 for each day work. Applications are available in each high school or may be downloaded at

WHITE FLINT COLLEGE AND CAREER PLANNING EXPO: OCTOBER 10TH
Students are invited to meet with representatives of colleges, universities and career-oriented businesses from around the country for information on continuiing education and career advancement. JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER "COLLEGE QUEST" COLLEGE FAIR
The JCC of Greater Washington will hold its 9th Annual CollegeQuest Fair on Sunday, October 31, 2004 at the JCC on Montrose Road in Rockville. UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND SAT STRATEGIES WORKSHOP
The Center for Minorities in Science and Engineering will be offering a workshop this fall that focuses on successful test-taking skills and sstrategies to help maximize their score on the SAT. The workshop will take place from September 13 - October 7, 2004 from 6:00 PM - 7:50 PM and 8:00 PM - 9:50 PM on the College Park Campus. HOWARD HUGHES/ NIH STUDENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
High school juniors and seniors are invited to apply to this demanding program. Students should have a minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrate significant interest in exploring a career in biomedical research. Algebra 2, biology and chemistry are a pre-requisitie. Students must be 16 years old by July 1 and must be a US citizen of hold a valid Green Card. Each school may nominate up to four students. Information and applications are available online at

CONGRESSMAN WYNN'S COLLEGE FAIR AND FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOP: OCTOBER 16
Over 140 colleges and universities, as well as vocational schools, lending institutions and experts from the Department of Education and Maryland High Education Commission will be available to talk with students. The Fair will take place at Northwestern High School in Hyattsville from 11:00 - 3:00 PM.

STUDENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR UPCOMING GENERAL ELECTIONS ON NOVEMBER 2
The Montgomery County Board of Elections is recreuiting Student Volunteers to serve on election day from 4:00 PM - 9:00 PM. Students who are 13-16 years of age may earn up to 8 copmmunity service hours. Sstudents ages 17 - 19 may earn cash for working from 6:00 AM - 9:00 PM. Bilingual students are especially needed. VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS COLLEGE FAIR - OCTOBER 24, 2004
The National Association for College Admission Counseling will hold their annual Visual and Performing Arts Fair in Washington on October 24th from 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM at the Kennedy Center. Admission is free and students interested in music, visual arts, theatre, dance and graphic design can meet with college representatives to discussion admission, financial aid, portfolio days and auditions.

HISPANIC HERITAGE FESTIVAL 2004
The Hispanic Heritage Coalition invites students and their families to the Hispanic Festival on Friday, September 10th at Hornbake Plaza on the University of Maryland campus. FREE GED PRACTICE TEST FOR MONTGOMERY COUNTY RESIDENTS
