Section 7.5 – Surface Area
and Volume of Cones
Cone – a solid consisting of a circular base and curved a lateral surface that connects the base to a single point not in the plane of the base, called the vertex.
altitude – a segment that has endpoints in the planes containing the bases and is perpendicular to both planes
height – the length of the altitude
slant height – the length of the lateral surface
right cylinder – a cone whose height is perpendicular to the base
oblique cylinder – a cone that is not right
Surface Area of a cone may be broken down into 2 parts: Base Area and Lateral Area
Surface Area and Volume Formulas
Right Cone:
where B is the Base Area, P
is the Perimeter of the base, h is the height, and
is the slant height
