Section 7.4 – Surface Area
and Volume of Cylinders
Cylinder – a solid consisting of a circular region and its translated image on a parallel plane, with a lateral surface connecting the circles.
altitude – a segment that has endpoints in the planes containing the bases and is perpendicular to both planes
height – the length of the altitude
right cylinder – a cylinder whose height is perpendicular to the bases
oblique cylinder – a cylinder that is not right
Surface Area of a cylinder may be broken down into 2 parts: Base Area and Lateral Area
Surface Area and Volume Formulas
Right Cylinder:
where B is the Base Area, P is the Perimeter of the base, and h is the height.
