Notes 5.1 – Perimeter and Area

Perimeter – the distance around a closed plane figure

                  the sum of the lengths of its sides

Area – the number of non-overlapping (no points in common) squares of a given size that will exactly cover the interior of a figure.

The Sum of Areas Postulate

If a figure is composed of non-overlapping regions A and B, then the area of the figure is the sum of the areas of regions A and B

Formula

Rectangle:      P = 2b + 2h      or         P = 2l + 2w

                        A = bh             or         A = lw
