The Parents of AP Language and Composition
Students
There has been some confusion
expressed by the students in AP Language classes about grades and their implications. Students are under the impression that
if they do not get A’s in all of their classes, they will then have no chance
at getting into college. This is not the
case.
One of the biggest obstacles faced this year –
in this class, by these students – is the reality that there are grades other
than A’s. The hardest part of coming to terms with this reality is accepting
that these other grades – especially
the B’s and the C’s – are perfectly
good grades, and that, while it may seem as though we have been in
school forever, we have only just
begun.
Your
children should be working harder in this class than they have been asked to do
in the past; it is a challenging AP course.
Please ask them what
they are doing. Ask them to share their work with you. They are working hard, and they are learning hard. Please
encourage them to pursue the art of learning and the gaining of knowledge, not simply the acquisition of an A.
