Interpreting Your Grade Print-Out
Grade Categories and Weights
Based on the recommendation of MCPS's Grading and Reporting Policy, work which assesses a student's learning will be graded on a 4-point scale in English classes. Assignments will be weighted by category. In English 12 courses, weights for 1st Marking Period only are as follows: Common Tasks 45%, Tests 20%, Quizzes 15%, Class/Homework 15%, Summer Reading 5%.
On a 4-point scale, numbers are averaged (much like a GPA) to determine a student's quarter grade. However, although grades on individual assignments will be a number from 0 to 4, because of the limitations of the Making the Grade program, the final grade appears as a percentage of 100, rather than on the 4-point scale. Grades will be assigned according to the following scale:
3.5-4
(appears as 87.5% on Making the Grade because 3.5 is 87.5% of 4) A
2.5--3.49
(appears as 62.5% on Making the Grade because 2.5 is 62.5% of 4) B
1.5--2.49
(appears as 37.5% on Making the Grade because 1.5 is 37.5% of 4) C
.5--1.49
(appears a 12.5% on Making the Grade because .5 is 12.5% of 4) D
0--.49
(anything below 12.5% on Making the Grade) E
How to Determine your Grade in a Category
Within each category, grades will be listed by individual assignment, with a category summary at the bottom of the category. For example, you might see this:
CATEGORY: Common Tasks
(45.0% of the Cumulative Grade)
Assignment Titles Your Scores Points Possible
1. "Girl" Essay 4 4
2. Voices in Animal Dreams 3 4
3. "Then and Now" Photo Project 3 4
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Category Summary 10 3
To determine your grade in this category, divide your total score by the number of grades (or total points possible). In this example, you would divide 10 by 3, which yields a score of 3.33, or a "B."
Note: If a category does not appear, this means that no grades have yet been completed in that category.
