Blake High School Simulated Congressional Hearing Showcase

On December 16, 2011 Students in Dr. Phillips' Global Issues and the Law class participated in a Simulated Congressional Hearing. Delivering expert testimony on issues ranging from the role of American government in foreign affairs, political parties, due process rights, freedom of speech and civil discourse, students were questionned by a panel of guest judges including County Council member Nancy Floreen, State Senator Karen Montgomery, and Board of Education member Michael Durso. Also in attendance to test the depth of the students' knowledge were representatives from Congressman Chris Van Hollen's office as well as MCPS social studies specialists. It was an excting day for the parents, students, judges and teachers as students took their civic education to a whole new level. Students will now prepare for a state-wide hearing in Annapolis, MD in early February. If they win, they will go on to represent Maryland at the national "We the People..." competition in April. For more information on the Simulated Congressional Hearing as sponsored by the Center for Civic Education, Click Here. For more information on the course offered at Blake, please email Dr. Phillips.

New Attendance Procedures - Revised

Student attendance in all classes is critically important to maximize student learning, attain good grades, and earn credits in high school.  Due to inconsistencies in the implementation of attendance procedures and resulting inequities among students across Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) high schools, the loss of credit procedures were eliminated during the 2010–2011 school year.  However, it was found that the elimination of these procedures during this past school year resulted in an unprecedented number of students being either late to class or not attending class, particularly seniors in their second semester.

As a result of these findings, a team consisting of high school principals and other MCPS staff members worked to create a plan for the 2011–2012 school year to address these issues.  The following procedures will be implemented at all high schools for this upcoming school year and are designed to bring consistency to addressing student attendance issues and to reinforce the expectations that class attendance is critical to student learning.
