Students who are interested in careers related to child development, such as child psychologist, teachers or daycare providers, for example, may meet their graduation requirements of completing a career preparing program by earning four credits in child development. The program is also open to students who do not intend to complete the program. The Child Development Program is articulated with Montgomery College. Students may apply for 3-9 credits when enrolling in the Montgomery College Early Childhood program.
Child and Adolescent w/Lab 1A and 1B
The Child Development program provides the opportunity for students to discover their potential as they work with children in our preschool. Students run the preschool and learn leadership and management skills which can be used in many professions relating to children. Students learn how to plan, teach and manage programs for children. Child development students also become familiar with communications/human relations, child psychology and development, creative learning techniques, health and nutrition and safety standards, child neglect and abuse regulations.

Child and Adolescent Development w/Lab 2A and 2B
After successful completion of Child Development 1, students continue to develop their teaching skills as they assume increased leadership responsibilities in the lab school setting. Students are responsible for program management as they develop and implement on site and off site age appropriate experiences for preschoolers. Upon completion of CD 2 and certification requirements, students may earn certification in the “99 Clock Hours Program.” This certification allows the student to obtain a senior staff position with concurrent salary and responsibilities in the daycare industry and prepares students for continuing education. The program is recognized by the Maryland State Department of Education.

Students research careers in education and other child-related fields of study and pursue their interests through independent study, research, advocacy projects, field trips, and observations.

Child Adol Development Education Internship A & B
The Child Development internship gives senior level students an opportunity to complement their formal education. Placement opportunities include working under a mentoring teacher in elementary, middle or high schools, day care centers, and other related programs. Students gain experience by working with work-site instructors in preparing and presenting teaching materials. Often interns have the opportunity to teach, do remediation, and work with students in small groups. Child development internships prepare students for careers in teaching, childcare, and related professions. Emphasis is placed on work skill competencies. Typically, students receive 1 or 2 credits per semester and complete 150-225 hours of placement on-site. This averages 8-12 hours per week and includes time spent in seminar sessions and doing projects. Interns must provide transportation to and from the internship site or be able to use CWE bus and public transportation to off campus placements. This course is only offered double or triple periods and students register for 1 or 2 periods of internship (4860) with 1 period of either CD 3 (4866/67) or Teaching and Curriculum (4874/75).
