In addition to celebrating Black History Month, we’re celebrating the opening of Black Panther this week!

Meetings

  • There is a new club starting. The Blake Law Club, The 1st meeting is this Wednesday in E-263 at 11:30am. All interested in joining please come and check it out. If you have any questions contact Mr. Loftus or Cecelia Doh for more details. (2/12-2/14)
  • This Thursday and Friday, February 15th and 16th, Candidates for the Student Member of the Board of Education, or SMOB, will be here at Blake at lunchtime to meet with students.  This is your chance to learn about what they do and ask any questions you want. Don’t forget - G184 at lunch - Thursday & Friday - Meet the SMOB candidates.  (2/12 - 2/16)

Career

  • That’s right, tonight is Blake's first ever evening Career Fair - the P.O.S.T. Expo -  which stands for Post-Secondary Options: Services & Trades Expo. Because there is no Career Day this year, tonight at 7pm is your chance to come and learn about the multitude of Career and Training options available to HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES!  That’s tonight at 7pm in the cafeteria.  Don’t miss it!
  • All students applying to the Betancourt Scholarship need to complete their applications by this Friday, Feb 16. Your application should include the necessary forms, essays, and either a portfolio or video.  Please turn the required materials into Mr. Overman in Room E269 or place them into his main office mailbox. This Day In History

On this day in history, President Abraham Lincoln was born in 1809. President Lincoln signed, and issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. Which freed all slaves being held in rebellious states.  Coincidentally, on this day in 1915 the cornerstone of the Lincoln Memorial was laid in Washington DC. 

Activities

  • Like you just saw in that promo, starting today at lunch, the Art Department’s Fire & Ice art Show opens, located in the Art Gallery in D151. Many talented Blake artists will be displaying their work!  Stop by and check it out!
  • The callbacks for Blake’s Dance Company will take place on tomorrow during lunch in front dance studio.  If you missed the first round of auditions please attend the callbacks! (2/12 & 2/13)
  • Attention Seniors:  If you still need to pay for your cap and gown, you may do so tomorrow (Tuesday Feb 13) at lunch outside of A200 or at the Senior parent meeting on Thursday night in the Amphitheater.  Cash and checks will only be accepted at these times.  February 23rd is the last day caps and gowns can be paid for online or in person.  See Ms. Phelps if you have any questions.   • Make tomorrow night pizza night at the Colesville Ledo’s located at New Hampshire Avenue and Randolph Road.  Tell the cashier that you are there for the Blake Beat fundraiser, and 20% of your purchase will go to Blake’s newspaper. (2/12)

Sports

  • Blake’s Varsity boys swim team finished in 13th place at the prestigious Metros Invitational meet. over the weekend.  The Bengals were led by senior Aaron Stanton, who placed 2nd in 100 Free (tying a school record) and 4th in 100 Breast (breaking his own school record).  Good luck to the boys and girls as the gear up as they gear up to take on regionals this Saturday at the PG Sports Complex.

  • Blake hosts Springbrook on Friday night in basketball, the final home game of the regular season. Girls play at 5:30pm and Boys play at 7:15pm. We will be pre-selling tickets at lunch on Friday at the spiral stairs – first 25 students to purchase a ticket get a free tshirt! We will be honoring seniors for Girls Basketball, Poms and Cheer at the game.(2/15 & 2/16)

  • Black Panther was created by two of the Founding Fathers Of Modern Comics,  Writer/editor Stan Lee and penciller/co-plotter Jack Kirby, Two of the greatest minds in comics.  These two men introduced the character to the masses way back in 1966.

Meetings

  • Congratulations to the It’s Academic team—Lily Byrne, Joseph Lee, and Caroline Calvo—who won a quarterfinal match Saturday over JEB Stuart and Washington-Lee, 705-370-330, respectively.  The match will air April 28, and the team will play in the semifinals May12 against Georgetown Day School and another team to be determined.
  • Do you need help with your singing skills?  Do you want to extra practice with ASL vocabulary?  American Sign Language Peer Tutoring is available every Tuesday at lunch in Room B113.   (2-6, 13, 20, 27)

Career

  • Seniors:  There is an  NAACP Scholarship is for college bound minority seniors; You must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.  Two letters of recommendation, an official transcript, and a 300 word essay are required.  Several $1000 scholarships will be awarded with the possibility to renew if the student attends a college in Maryland. Applications must be postmarked by Feb 23.  Pick up a copy in the blue bin in the Career Center or find more details online in the Naviance Document Library.
  • Seniors who still need to pay for caps and gowns: We will be collecting payments on Wednesday, February 21st during lunch outside the Media Center. Caps and Gowns are $45.00. The payment deadline is Friday, February 23rd. (2/20, 2/21, 2/23)
  • Juniors, tell your parents/guardians about “Getting Ahead of the Curve,” a special program to be held at Blake on March 8 at 6:30 p.m.  We will have a panel of admissions representatives answering questions about the college application process.  The event will be held in the AMP.

This Day In History

On this day in 1927, actor and director Sidney Poitier (Poi-tee-ay) was born in the Bahamas.  Poitier is most well known for his roles in the films “In the Heat of the Night” and “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.  He is the first Bahamian and African American to win the Academy Award for Best Actor.  He won for his role in the 1963 film “Lilies of the Field”.

Activities

  • Best Buddies is having a tee shirt sale starting today through March 2nd. See Mrs. Myers for more information. 
  • Shouldn’t every girl who wants to go, have the chance to go to prom, no matter their financial status?  Starting Monday the Hispanic Leadership Club is collecting gently used or new prom dresses.  The drive will last for two weeks. Donations can be dropped off in Mrs. Ramos’s room.  HLC would appreciate it if the dresses were already cleaned, prior to donating.  Dresses will be distributed to those in need shortly after the drive concludes.  (2/16, 2/19, 2/22)
  • Make sure you check out the Black History Month posters around the school before the month is over.  The posters, which are hung throughout our building highlight and celebrate achievements of over 25 ground-breaking, glass ceiling-shattering African Americans.  Hope you are inspired by and enjoy them! 
  • Please join us for the second annual Black History Month Poetry and Art Show sponsored by the Black Student Union.  It will be held this Wednesday, during lunch in the Amphitheater.  Hope to see you there! (2/20 - 2/21)

Sports

  • Girls Varsity Basketball beat rival Springbrook on Senior Night, Friday 46-32.  Kennedy Love led the Bengals with 13 points and Alex Konzmann scored 11 for Blake. 
  • Boys swimming finished in second place and girls finished in seventh at regionals over the weekend at the 4A-3A North Regional meet.

  • The debate team had an incredible night at finals last night. Three out of their five pairs advanced to the top 16, which will debate for top ranks today after school. A big shout out to Blake’s finalists, Claire Nelson, Elias Boussouf, Keza Levine, Callan Logan, Dhruva Someshwar, and Jack O’Grady!

This Day In History

On this day in history in 1820, Susan B. Anthony was born.  Anthony was a social reformer and women's rights activist who played a crucial role in the women's suffrage movement. In her quest to earn women the right to vote, she not only  travelled all over the world, but she was arrested in Rochester, New York in 1872.  Her hard work paid off in 1920, when the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified, and women earned the right to vote.

  • Did you know you can cheer on the Blake Boys Varsity Basketball game here tonight AND support Blake Best Buddies at the same time? All you have to do is buy some yummy snacks to support Best Buddies. Also, Look for more information about the Best Buddies tee shirt sale from February 20th -March 5th.

Sports

  • That’s right! Blake hosts Springbrook tomorrow night in basketball.  It’s the final home game of the regular season. Girls play at 5:30pm and Boys play at 7:15pm. We will be pre-selling tickets at lunch tomorrow at the spiral stairs and the first 25 students to purchase a ticket will receive a tshirt! At the game, Seniors for Girls Basketball, Poms and Cheer will be honored.  Don’t miss it!. (2/15 & 2/16)
  • There will be an informational meeting at lunch on Friday in room C-131 for anyone interested in playing Boys tennis this Spring. Stop by to get information about the upcoming season!

  • Registration for Spring sports at Blake is now open online on the Blake website! In order to participate in a Spring sport, your parent or guardian must register you through the myMCPS Parent Portal. More information is available on the Blake Athletics website. Spring sports start on March 1st – be sure to register in advance. As a reminder, you must have an up to date physical within the past calendar year on file with the school.   • It's time to spice up your love for reading with the Media Center’s Blind Date with a Book Contest!  All you have to do is choose a blind date book and check it out.  If is a match, keep reading and enjoy.   • Rita's Water Ice is looking to hire staff for the 2018 Season for their  store in Burtonsville. Students aged 17 or older are preferred.  You must be able to work 4 or 5 days a week.  Come to the Career Center for online application instructions. The deadline to apply is Feb. 25. (2/14 - 2/25)
  • All students applying to the Betancourt Scholarship need to complete their applications by this Friday, Feb 16. Your application should include the necessary forms, essays, and either a portfolio or video.  Please turn the required materials into Mr. Overman in Room E269 or place them into his main office mailbox.   • The Montgomery County chapter of the NAACP is offering several one thousand dollar scholarships to MCPS minority seniors who have a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA.  The application includes a 300 word essay, 3  paragraph personal statement, 2 recommendation letters and an official transcript.  The deadline is February 23rd.  See Mrs. Prochnow for more information.   • Montgomery College is offering another scholarship - the Board of Trustees Scholarship.  This scholarship is for seniors who have at least a 3.0 cum weighted GPA.  If awarded, this scholarship pays for one year of tuition and books and can be renewed for a 2nd year.  Two short essays, one letter, official transcript required.   Stop by the Career Center to pick up an application. The deadline is March 1. (2/14 - 2/23)
  • SGA is partnering with the Red Cross to sponsor a blood drive on February 27th. Everyone interested in being a volunteer to help out can come to an informational meeting on this Friday during lunch in G184.   • “Blake’s debate team had a spectacular run with its three senior pairs at the final tournament of 16 last night. Seniors Elias Boussouf, Claire Nelson, Keza Levine, and Callan Logan all made it to the semi-finals, placing them in the top four pairs out of more than 600 debaters in the league overall. Seniors Dhruva Someshwar and Jack O’Grady also exceeded, rising to the quarter finals. Overall, the Blake debate team came in third in the county, out of 23 participating high school. Great job, debating Bengals!”

Career Center

  • Juniors who DID NOT complete a paper SAT voucher AND are interested in receiving a free ACT voucher MUST attend the lunch meeting today.  Completed ACT Voucher registrations are due Feb 20th. (2/16)
  • Seniors:  There is an  NAACP Scholarship is for college bound minority seniors; You must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.  Two letters of recommendation, an official transcript, and a 300 word essay are required.  Several $1000 scholarships will be awarded with the possibility to renew if the student attends a college in Maryland. Applications must be postmarked by Feb 23.  Pick up a copy in the blue bin in the Career Center or find more details online in the Naviance Document Library.

This Day In History

On this day in 1874, Frederick Douglass was elected the president of Freedman's Savings and Trust Company.  The Freedman's Savings and Trust Company was established as a secure banking institution where Black soldiers who served in the Civil War could save their money as well as encourage the African-American community to save their money.
