Meetings

  • Seniors!! Have you gotten your tickets for the Senior banquet yet?  Tickets are now on sale on the Blake website for $37.50 for the April 12th event.  Don’t miss out on a fun evening with your friends.  It’s from 7pm -11pm at the Ten Oaks Ballroom in Clarksville.   Don’t wait to order, sales end on April 2nd - that’s the day we return from spring break!!!   • Juniors, attend the College Fair with your classmates on April 10th at  the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.  Busses will leave at the end of 2nd period and return during lunch.  Hundreds of colleges will attend.  Permission slips are available on the Blake homepage and in the Career Center.  The deadline to submit your permission slip is April 4th.   • The “Career and Innovation Summit”, which is geared toward MCPS girls, has been moved to Arpril 7 from 9 am to 3:30 pm at MC in Takoma Park.  At this  FREE event you can explore career options through workshops and participate in a fun group challenge.  There is a cost-free bus picking up from Blake, and Free lunch is offered.  See the flier outside the Career Center for more info.   • All high school girls are invited to a “Career and Innovation Summit” on March 24 from 9 am to 3:30 pm at MC in Takoma Park.  At this  FREE event you can explore career options through workshops and participate in a fun group challenge. There is a cost-free bus picking up from Blake, and free lunch is offered.   See the flier outside the Career Center for more information. (2/26, 3/1, 3/5)
  • Juniors, attend the College Fair with your classmates on April 10th at  the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.  Busses will leave at the end of 2nd period and return during lunch.  Hundreds of colleges will attend.  Permission slips are available on the Blake homepage and in the Career Center.  The deadline to submit your permission slip is April 4th.   • College bound seniors who have a minimum GPA of 2.0 and live in HOC subsidized housing should see Mrs. Prochnow in the Career Center about the Bernie Scholarship.  Applications are due March 20. (2/27, 3/5)

This Day In History

On this day in 1953, the first Academy Awards were telecast on NBC, hosted by Bob Hope. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences began giving out awards in 1929, but with the rising popularity of televisions gave the Academy the idea to broadcast the awards show.

Plan on purchasing your mulch from our Booster Club, which will support our student-athletes and the Athletic Department.  You can place your orders now online.  See the Blake Athletics website for more details.

  • The Leisure World Kiwanis Foundation is offering scholarships for Blake seniors with at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA, who demonstrate leadership, community service experience, and financial need.  Applications are available in Career Center, and are due to Ms. Prochnow by April 4.   • Bengal Café Employees – Please stop in D-153 sometime this week to submit your Marking Period #3 SSL Hours form to Mr. Katz. All forms must be turned in for verification by Friday, April 13, 2018. (4/10-4/12)

This Day In History

On this day in 1953, the first color 3-D film opens.  The horror film The House of Wax, starring Vincent Price, opens at New York’s Paramount Theater. Released by Warner Brothers, it was the first movie from a major motion-picture studio to be shot using the three-dimensional, or stereoscopic, film process. In 2017 Thirty seven movies were released in 3D.

  • Blake’s PTSA is offering a scholarship that will award $200 to $500 dollars to graduating seniors with a 3.25 or higher GPA and 100 or more SSL hours. Students must be planning to attend a 2 or 4 year college in the fall. This Day In History

On this day in 1947, President Harry S. Truman officially opens the first White House bowling alley. Truman did not use the alley much himself, but supported a group of White House employees in forming a White House Bowling League in 1950.

  • Juniors and Seniors, don’t forget to purchase your prom tickets.  You can purchase them online from the Blake website or see Ms. Voundy in room A209 during lunch today through Monday April 30.  There are a  limited number of tickets to purchase in school.  If you plan to purchase in person, you must have exact change =  $75. Seniors, guest forms must be completely filled out before you can pick up your tickets. 
  • In 2015 the majority of LGBTQ students at Blake reported hearing biased remarks from school staff, and school staff often failed to intervene when they heard these remarks at school. (56 percent of LGBTQ students reported that they heard homophobic remarks and 64 percent witnessed negative remarks about gender expression from school staff. There was also a decrease in school staff's frequency of intervention in these types of remarks from 2013 to 2015.
  • Will you stand in solidarity with LGBTQ students who feel silenced by discrimination? This Friday, please wear red or be silent for the day to show your support.  You can pick up Day of Silence cards all week at lunch at the A4E table in the spiral staircase.  What are you doing to end the silence?

SPELLING BEE deals with an annual spelling contest. The musical is great fun and is one of the most popular musicals currently being produced in the USA. This Day In History

On this day in 1897, the first Boston Marathon was held. The marathon was thought up by Boston Athletic Association member and inaugural U.S. Olympic team manager John Graham, who was inspired by the marathon at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896.

  • Juniors and Seniors purchasing Prom tickets must have paid their financial obligations before you can pick up your prom tickets.  Remember, the last day of ticket sales is April 30th.
  • Any junior interested in applying for the National Honors Society, please come to room B230 at lunch next Tuesday, April 24th for an information meeting and an application. Interested students must have at least a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.5 or weighted 4.0 as well as completed at least 60 documented SSL hours.(4/18-4/24)
  • Attention ALL World Language students…Are you interested in becoming a member of your World Language Honor Society?  Pick up an application from your world language teacher no later than tomorrow.  All applications are due to your world language teacher by April 25.  (4/18-4/20)
  • The Blake Athletic Booster Club will be holding its annual mulch sale this Saturday, April 21st. All students who participated in sports this year are expected to volunteer at some point during the day. Sports

  • Yesterday several teams competing yesterday.  Here are some of the highlights: 
  • Boys Varsity Volleyball beat Paint Branch 3-0. 
  • Boys Varsity Lacrosse beat Magruder 12-6. Ethan Weaver led the Bengals with five goals. Alec Reyes, Mason Sanderoff, Evan Deans, and Ben Hamlett all scored goals for the win!
  • Varsity Softball beat Magruder 10-0 in five innings. Jordan Pack went 4-4 with four runs scored and Olivia Edmundson went 2-3 with a triple and two RBIs. Nicole Kidwiler pitched five shutout innings and struck out five batters.

  • Seniors:  If you have a 2.7+ GPA and significant community service, apply for the Ivy Vines Charities Scholarship.  Several scholarships are available, but you only have to fill out one application. Awards range from $500 to $5000.  $3500 award to attend an HBCU.  The deadline is this Friday.  Applications are available in the Career Center (4/17 - 4/19)

  • Juniors and Seniors - In case you didn’t know, prom tickets are now on sale for $75 online via the Blake website. And though the May 18th date seems far away, tickets will only be on sale through April 30th.   • The Blake Athletic Booster Club will be holding its annual mulch sale this Saturday, April 21st. All students who participated in sports this year are expected to volunteer at some point during the day. Check with your coach for team volunteer schedules. If you are a student in need of SSL hours, come up to Blake at the gym entrance from 8am-3pm to earn hours! (4/17 - 4/21)
  • There are several new scholarships available to seniors and many are due at the end of April. They include the Rossmore scholarship, the Olney Lions Club scholarship, and the Blake PTSA scholarship, just to name a few.   • Blake’s PTSA is offering a scholarship that will award $200 to $500 dollars to graduating seniors with a 3.25 or higher GPA and 100 or more SSL hours. Students must be planning to attend a 2 or 4 year college in the fall. Applications are available in the Career Center and are due to Mrs. Prochnow by April 25th.  Students or their parents must be a PTSA member. If you’re not a member, students can join for just $10.   • Are you taking an AP exam next month, and need an AP Study Guide?  Mrs. Prochnow has a collection of guides in the Career Center that you can check out.  When you are finished studying, simply return it to her. (4/16, 4/17, 4/20)

SAT Word Of The Day

The SAT Word of the Day is TRUCKLE  meaning to submit or yield in a  tame manner. Everyone in the family is scared of Aunt Wanda and will quickly TRUCKLE to her demands.

This Day In History

On this day in 1986, the Chicago Bulls’ Michael Jordan scores 63 points in an NBA playoff game against the Boston Celtics, setting a post-season scoring record. Despite Jordan’s achievement, the Bulls lost to the Celtics in double overtime, 135-131. Boston swept the three-game series and went on to win the NBA championship that year.

  • Please join the Environmental Club today at lunch to celebrate Earth Day.  There will be tables at the spiral staircase with a variety of information and activities.  There will also be a recycling station set up, so bring something to recycle and get a surprise!  Promote Earth Day by using the hastag #BlakeGoesGreen to highlight the ways you are helping to protect the Earth.  (4/20)
