Blake’s Tertulias club will be meeting on Tuesday at lunch in B123. If you want to practice your Spanish skills in an informal setting, come join us for lunch and conversation. All students are welcome to attend. ¡Nos vemos el martes!

SAT Word Of The Day

The SAT Word of the Day is intrepid meaning to be fearless or bold. “Our intrepid anchor decided to make a joke on air.”  

Activities

Hey Blake students and staff members! Today is the last day for the Project Change non-perishable food donations for the Manna Food Center. You can put your donations in the designated boxes located by the main and counseling offices.
Briggs Chaney MS is looking for students to serve as counselors at Outdoor Ed in early December. Applications can be found in the Counseling Office and in the Career Center and are due back by Tuesday, 11/21. All info about the program can be found in the application packet.
The Black Student Union is collecting toys again this year for Toys for Tots. If you would like to donate, please bring new, unwrapped toys to the following offices: Social Studies, English, Math, Science, World Languages, the Main Office, Counseling Office and the Media Center.
This year Toys for Tots is also collecting cash donations so if you would like to donate money instead, please see Ms. Givens in room F302.
We hope you can help make a local child’s holiday season a little brighter this year. Thank you in advance for your support.

Varsity Wrestling will be having a conference game with Damascus at Watkins Mill on Saturday, December 9th at 2:30 pm. Junior Varsity Wrestling will be having a match with Seneca Valley at Home on Wednesday, December 13 2017 at 7:15 pm.

Hey ________ you know what else Sources of Strength is sponsoring this week? Another Karaoke/Poetry slam. Students should come down to the amphitheater at lunch tomorrow for the karaoke and poetry event. Sing a song, read a poem, or just watch the performances. See you there!

SAT Word Of The Day

The SAT Word of the Day is travesty meaning a debased, distorted, or grossly inferior imitation. Andy forgot about his speech for English class, and when he gave it, the speech was an absolute travesty.

Don’t forget when you’re out shopping for Black Friday to pick up a toy for Toys for Tots! Or, you can donate cash as well. Drop off toys to the main or counseling office. (11/21 & 11/22)
The Girl Scout’s Council of the Nation’s Capital’s “Your Turn to Lead Conference” be held on Saturday, December 2nd from 1-5 PM at the Four Corners Campus of Silver Spring United Methodist Church.
Learn how to set financial goals, make new friends from other schools, and meet female role models from the community. For more info, stop by the Career Center. (11/21 - 11/30)

College

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore will conduct on-the-spot admissions at Blake on December 5 beginning at 9:30 am. UMES is looking for seniors with at least a 2.5 cum weighted GPA and a 930 SAT or 18 ACT.
The application fee is waived for this event! Sign up with Mrs. Prochnow in the Career Center or with Ms. McMillan in Counseling. (11/27)

Today is an all period half day. Remember we go straight through periods one through seven, and lunch will be served from 11:30 to 12 after 7th period.
Also - reports cards will be available for distribution today at lunch in the auditorium. If you don’t pick up your report card today, they will be distributed during homeroom on Monday after 7th period.

Today is a SILVER BLOCK day.

Meetings

The debate team had strong results in last night's tournament with 17 wins overall, and 11 losses. Two pairs remain undefeated for the season: Seniors Elias Boussouf and Claire Nelson, and Sophomores Joseph Lee and Bridget Byrne. The team is currently ranked #1 in the county for debate, out of 21 participating high schools! Congratulations debating Bengals! (11/16)
This is a reminder to the Class of 2021 Class Council: Thursday afternoon from 3-4pm in the media center, there is a joint meeting with the sophomore class to discuss our joint holiday fundraiser. See Mrs. Hiscock with any questions. (11/14 - 11/16)
The Christian Club meets every Thursday during lunch in room E170. The club, which is open to all, encourages all students to reflect on Faith and Truth. Bibles are encouraged! (11/14, 11/16)

Today representatives from the National Institute of Health in Bethesda will be in the Career Center at lunch to speak with interested juniors and seniors about summer internship opportunities involving STEM. Winter sports tryouts started yesterday, so we don’t have any scores to share, but mark your calendars!
The first Boys’ basketball games of the season are Friday, December 8th at Good Counsel. Junior Varsity at 5:30 and Varsity will be at 7:00.
The Girls’ Varsity and Junior Varsity basketball teams will host Holy Cross here at Blake Friday, December 8th as well. Junior Varsity at 5:15 pm and Varsity at 7:00 pm and at Home! Come on out and show your support, Bengals!

The Blake Stage Company’s production of Disney’s THE LITTLE MERMAID continues this Friday and Saturday night at 7 pm. The show, featuring over 40 of Blake’s most talented students includes songs like “UNDER THE SEA’ and “The World Above”. You can purchase tickets online through the Blake web page or at the door thirty minutes prior to showtime. Don’t miss this exciting show! (11/15)
