Summer Sensations at
Blake HS

Summer Sensations for Fine Arts, Humanities and Academic/Academy
Advancement offers Blake students unusual and unique
experiencs.
Our
Sensations will provide students an opportunity to do in-depth
study and
research
in specific areas related to the signature themes, academy pathways
and academic achievement
in high school.
Emphasis: Each
participating student will select two either seminars for Signature Sensations or a one week Academy/Academic course. Sessions will be comprised of lecture,
research, discussion, individual work/projects, and group work/projects. Some sessions may offer an optional field
trip. A culminating activity will be
presented on July
11, 2008, from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. This
culminating activity will give students an opportunity to showcase work in
progress and completed work.
Dates: June
30 – July 11, 2008. Sessions will meet
Monday through Friday. No classes July 4th.

Eligibility: Students
currently in grades 8-11 who will be attending Blake High School
in the fall of 2008 are eligible to participate in this program. Students currently in grade 7 who would
like to experience the arts and humanities focus at Blake before making a
high school choice next fall, will be accepted on a space-available basis.
Attendance: Daily attendance is required. Students will not be readmitted to the
program after a two-day absence. Students whose summer job or vacation
plans conflict in any way with the program should not apply.
Tuition: Tuition is $100.00
for two-week sessions and $75 for one-week sessions. Checks should be made
payable to James
Hubert Blake
High School. A session confirmation letter will be
mailed on or before June 6.
Tuition is non-refundable after May 23. For more information on a tuition waiver,

Enrollment: Enrollment
in each session is limited.
Applications will be taken on a first come, first -served basis. Due to space limitations, students will be
asked to provide additional session choices in the event that the first and
second choices are full. Sessions
that do not meet the minimum enrollment requirement will be cancelled..
SAT Prep
Class: Double Block
Students will receive daily preparation for taking the SAT so that they may enhance their chances of
maximizing their scores on the New SAT
Utilizing materials for building vocabulary, comprehension, analytical
skills, essay development and math concepts will be employed. Students will
focus on both their weaknesses and strengths in order to perform well on
tests. This course will take up two block periods.
VISUAL AND CONTEMPORARY ARTS
Introduction to
Digital Imaging with Adobe PhotoShop
Students discover the unique power of working with
PhotoShop to create illustrations, paintings and graphics on the computer.
Learn how to create professional graphics and art work while making fun
projects. Class will include designing web graphics and art work while making
fun projects. Class will include designing web graphics, working with color
and using the variety of text effects and filters available in PhotoShop.
Animation and
Character Design with Macromedia Flash
Learn how to design animated
characters using the professional quality software, Macromedia Flash. Learn
how to draw and animate your design using this web-based animation software.
Develop your own story using storyboards and take your character from concept
to final animation.
Web Site Development
Do you have a webpage? Did you create it or did you
have to follow a template that you didn’t like? In this course you will learn
how to create a website from scratch designed as you want. You will also
explore the HTML coding that forms the page and ways to alter it to create
effects. Finally, you will also explore other issues relating to website
development. Sign up for this course and you will have your own site to
share!
Computer Game Development
Do you play video games? Are you creative? Then this
class is for you! Examine different aspects of video games and the process in
developing games. Groups will create their own games using Game Design
Documents. Create your own computer games using the Game Maker game engine.
Sign up for this course and your creation just might be the envy of your
friends.

ARTS AND DESIGN
Stagecraft
for Theatre and the Entertainment Industry (Double Block)
Enjoy a fun-filled, brain teasing
experience designing and building for a production. Learn to make models from
your own drawings for sets. You’ll utilize computers to be on the cutting
edge of design! Students will work on projects that will become part of a
professional portfolio. Work with a scenic professional who will teach you
everything from carpentry skills to finishing off your projects with paint.
Recommended for students who plan on participating in Blake Stage Company
Productions. Fun! Fun!
Video
Production A (Combine with B)
Lights! Camera! Action! Learn the
basics of video production as you plan, shoot, and edit a short documentary. Students
will use state-of-the-art digital cameras, and cutting edge industry editing
equipment to create an interesting and artistic video story. Future producers, videographers,
and television reporters – this is your chance to learn and practice video
techniques in the Blake studio and on location.
Video Production B
While
video production is a one block seminar, students who wish to take two full
blocks of TV production in lieu of another seminar may elect to do so. The students in Video Production B will
serve as producers and coordinators for videos produced during the Summer
Institute. You must take Video
Production A in order to take B.
Digital Arts
Advanced Portfolio Development
Work with Master Teacher
John Overman on your portfolio for college admission or for presentation to
enter the real-world graphic/digital arts workplace. Students will
utilize our modern lab and several advanced programs to prepare their
portfolio under the supervision of this master teacher. In addition, students
will receive critical
suggestions from professionals in the workplace and at
universities to sharpen their portfolio skills and presentations.
Summer Music Experience
Interested in music? Be a part of the summer music
experience. Students who play
instruments or enjoy singing and sort of music are welcome to join. This fun workshop
is open to all consortium students from incoming grades 8-10. The group will meet daily and develop
musical skills while performing varying styles such as: music from jazz, to gospel, to current
favorites, and classical material.
Students will also get the opportunity to receive master classes on
their specific skills from University students and
individual teachers. Meet and perform
with other students in the area This
is a double session activity. The
Music Experience will be taught by Mr. Johnathan
Dunn, Blake’s superb music teacher.
THEATRE
Musical Theatre
What makes “Les Miserable”
a riveting theatre experience? How do
the actors in a performance of “Rent” create both comedy and tragedy in a
rock song? Team taught by a theatre and
music instructor, this seminar will allow students to explore both acting and
singing as inseparable elements of a musical theatre performance. Students will have the opportunity to learn
about music from Broadway shows, develop a featured performance, as well as
understand the critical role of the ensemble in musical theatre.
Acting 101
This course will focus on developing monologues for
theatre auditions and college scholarships as well as scene work for the
collaborative experience. Material
will range from student-written work to popular movie scripts to modern
drama. Improvisation is an important
element in the creative process and will be the foundation for this
session. Students will learn various
improvisation techniques, games, and how to create improv
scenes. Enrollment is open to anyone
with a creative spirit!
DANCE
Dance 101
Do you love to put on music and dance? Have you always wanted to learn to express
yourself through movement? Always
wanted to take a dance class but you’re not sure what style? Then this is the class for you. Dance 101 is for those who have had limited
or no dance
experience or those who have had experience in other forms and would like to
explore new styles. This course
introduces the basics of jazz dance, modern dance, tap dance and ballet. The course is a potpourri of many styles
and an excellent introduction to the Blake Dance Department. Guest teachers and various videos will
enrich classes throughout the two weeks.
Come join in the Blake dance community and have a blast!
Dance for
Musical Theatre
You can learn the steps and routines from High School Musical 1 and 2 as well as other famous Broadway
shows like A Chorus Line by taking
this course. By thee end of the session you will be able to dance in two
routines put together by one of our Blake Teacher/Choreographers. Have fun
with dancing, working out, and being part of a real dance experience.
