James Hubert Blake High School Receives $10,000 Grant for Chess Club

The major goal of the after school chess club is to provide high risk students a way to reconnect with school, improve their academic performance and increase their knowledge of chess.

Through weekly Chess Club meetings the staff at Blake High School aims to reduce feelings of alienation experienced by its high risk students. The program in addition to improving student’s chess skills will help students form mentoring relationships with staff members. Students will play chess with other students, administrators, security guards, police officers, staff and parents.

The Chess Club which will start in September 2007 will be open to all students. The club will have guest instructors from UMBC or local Chess Clubs and compete with local high schools to advance students’ skills. They will also host a parent night.

Omari Daniel Ph.D. a teacher at Blake High School wrote the proposal that resulted in a $10,000 grant from the Maryland State Department of Education, Chess in Maryland Schools program. Mr. Daniel will be the Chess Club
