Blake Student Newspaper Named School Newspaper #2 in Maryland
Blake High School’s student newspaper, The Beat was named the second-best high school newspaper in Maryland for 2005-2006 in a contest sponsored by Towson University’s journalism department and announced Friday.
Matt Boyle won first-in-the state honors for feature photography for his front-page ArtsBeat photo of Gabi DeLuca in the student musical production of Anything Goes. Corrina and Kameko Jacobs won third-in-the-state honors for their coverage of the death of Kanisha Neal.
The Blake Beat was named as the top high school newspaper in America in May by the Association of Educational Publishers and Weekly Reader and received a Gold Medalist Rating from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association last month.
Top editors for 2005-2006 and the schools they currently attend include Editors-in-Chief Corrina Jacobs (Tufts) and Grace Livingstone (St. Mary's); Associate Editors Kameko Jacobs (Oberlin), Caitlin Keeley (Hofstra), Jaclyn King (Hofstra), Adam Purucker ( Maryland), Stephanie Richard ( Lafayette), and Nicole Sloane (Clemson); Director of Photography Matt Boyle (Hallmark Institute of Photography); and Graphics Managing Editor Emily Toy (UMBC).
