Third Grade - Ms. Yoder

Third Grade Math Students Create Structures

During the geometry unit, Ms. Yoder’s Third Grade Math Class, constructed polyhedron solids with tooth picks and marshmallows. In the computer lab, they created funny stories and descriptive essays about their structures. Click here to read several examples of their creative writing.

TILTING TOWER TERROR

In Italy, there were workers building “The Tilting Tower” otherwise known as The Leaning Tower of Pisa. They’re building it with MARSHMALLOWS??? TOOTHPICKS????? What is this? A geometry third grade class project??!! Look at the time!! It’s 11:30 in Italy right now, so the workers (the workers call themselves, Pyramids) walk to the Octagon diner singing the song “Polygons and Shapes” Hey! I see two people walking under the caution line!! Whoa! It’s the Prism Brothers! Looks like Triangular Prism escaped jail!! Where’s his brother? He has the power of disappearing and reappearing, he could be any- There he is!! Chomp!! Oh,no! They’re eating The Tilting Tower!! Where’s the Parallelogram People when you need them?? They are the ONE and ONLY people to save The Tilting Tower! What is the in the sky? The Parallelogram People!! What the? No wonder why they’re late!! They were eating! Eating a FAST FOOD MEAL FROM MCDONALD’S!!!!!!!!!! Oh, well! BAM!! BOOM!! Ow, that’s got to hurt!! Rectangle is beating up Rectangular Prism, with some help from Rhombus, Triangular Prism is now Triangular Pyramid. Woo-ah, woo-ah!! It’s the polygon police! Looks like Square called them on his polygon cell phone!!

“NNNOOOO!!!!!!” yelled Rectangular Prism, kicking and sobbing.

“I always wanted to be a Pyramid.” said Triangular Pyramid, smoothing his hair.

“Looks like your dream came true Pyramid!” laughed Rhombus.

“Give these guys a Styrofoam jail.” informed Square.

“Which means no windows.” growled Rectangle, staring madly at Prism.

Finally, the police drove the Prism Brothers to jail. Then the workers came saw what happened, shook their heads, and said that they are never going to build stuff with food again then they started to build with wood. Thank GOODNESS!! But, you’ll never know what will happen next…….

The End  . . . . . .      Or is it????

Shape Mob

Once there was a little shape store. There they sold shapes for math teachers to use in geometry. But soon, all the math teachers had shapes and they didn’t need any more. So the owner of the shop, Mr. Lactoupse thought about turning the shape shop into a clothes shop. But the villagers protested to keep the shape shop. Then Mr. Lactoupse started running away! Then the crowd formed an angry mob! The mob ran to a warehouse store, and ran back out with a lot of anti – mosquito torches! The mob chased and chased Mr. Lactoupse until finally they came to a dead end. They closed in on the on the owner of shape shop. Then Mr. Lactoupse said he would turn the shape shop into a polyhedron museum. The townspeople agreed and that’s how the National Polyhedron Building was born.

Geometric Rocket Ship

I own the geometric rocket ship. It crashed into an asteroid rock on October 6, 2006. It was the saddest moment of my life!!! I think my rocket ship had 40 line segments. It was basically a cube combined with a square pyramid. Well, I guess that's the end of my geometric rocket ship story.
