Apr. 23, Gazette: B-CC boys tennis beats WJ

The Bethesda-Chevy Chase boys tennis team evened its record at 4-4 with a 4-3 win over Montgomery Division I foe Walter Johnson Friday. It was the Barons’ second division win of the year and helped soften the blow from Thursday’s 4-3 loss to division opponent Northwest.

B-CC’s lineup is anchored by its senior Nos. 1 and 2, Arman Moussavi and Natty Sergay, and junior No. 3 Kan Onuchi. All three picked up wins Friday — Moussavi defeated Jamie Spies, 6-1, 6-1; Sergay pulled out a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Ouisha Eihd and Onuchi beat Rafael Coburn in straight sets.

Erik Klontz and Beck Freidman pulled out B-CC’s fourth win at No. 2 doubles. The two had never played together before; both their partners were sidelined Friday.

‘‘It was nice to bounce back after Thursday’s loss and get a good division win,” B-CC coach John Zehner said. ‘‘We had a tough schedule early playing Wootton and Churchill. We knew to win matches against those teams beyond the elite we’d have to get wins from our top three players.”

The doubles teams have been a question mark early in the year but are starting to come around as of late. Zehner had been experimenting with different matchups and looking for the right combinations and feels like he’s found it as the county tournament approaches — the regular season concludes on April 30.

‘‘We have four matches left,” Zehner said. ‘‘We’ve started to figure out who plays well with who and hope to be on a roll by counties. We’re going to try and advance as far as we can in each bracket and hope to finish in the top five or six.”

Apr. 2, Gazette: Whitman tennis to fight off challengers

Many of the big names associated with boys tennis I he public-school ranks the last four years are gone in 2008: three-time state champion and former Churchill No. 1 Jared Pinsky (now at Duke), former Whitman No. 1 and 2007 county champion Dan Stahl (now at Notre Dame), and former Wootton No. 1 Roshan Potarazu (now at Maryland) all graduated last year. But Montgomery County is rich in tennis talent — the county’s Region II accounted for three of five possible titles at last year’s state tournament — and there are a new crop of gifted players ready to step into more prominent roles and cultivate new rivalries.

Whitman (12-0 record in 2007) won its second county Division I title in three years in 2007 and became the first team other than Churchill or Wootton to win the county tournament in at least 15 years. The Vikings graduated two of their top four players but still return a solid nucleus capable of retaining both titles. But there are a number of teams, including Churchill, Wootton, Blair, Northwest and Bethesda-Chevy Chase, keen on making sure that doesn’t happen. ...

B-CC will rely heavily on its top three players, senior Nos. 1 and 2, Arman Moussavi and Natty Sergay, and junior Kan Onuchi, who are all returning starters. The Barons are hoping that some stronger doubles performances will help them finish in the top half of Division I and top five at counties.

Players to watch ... Arman Moussavi (B-CC, Sr.)

Match reports:
