JV Girls Soccer Results

2008 JV Girls Soccer

Game reports:

Oct. 20: B-CC 6, Seneca Valley 0

The final girls junior varsity soccer game came on Monday, a make-up for a previously rained-out match against Seneca Valley High School.  A festive air filled the stadium as the JV team handily defeated their opponents as the varsity squad prepared for the Senior Night celebration.

Coach Brett DeMunter decided to mix it up and moved a number of players around to give them the opportunity to try new positions, as well as meting out plenty of playing time to all.  After several minutes of moving the ball around the field, B-CC put the first point on the board when Amy Heaton, playing in the forward position after spending the season as center defensive back, headed the ball in on a well-placed corner kick from forward Jess Kehoe.  Comfortable up front, Heaton soon followed with a beautiful cross to Kehoe, who drilled it in for goal #2.  Seneca Valley tried its best to slow down the B-CC offense, and a determined goalie prevented any further scoring during the first half, but Seneca Valley was unable to do more than drive the ball down the field before the B-CC defense, consisting of Nicole Parina, Juliette MacRostie, Jillian Konoshima, Helen Petty, Brenna McManus, and Katharina Mitchell, returned it to their waiting offense.  Forwards and midfielders Rebecca Wenker, Tess Hanifee, Krystan Norris, Sarah King, Katie Carden, co-captain Lily Berman, Shayna Goldsmith, Elena Muller, Nicole Butler, Madeline Kenton and Sloane Warner all contributed to B-CC’s ability to dominate, showing the kind of teamwork that is well-honed during practices and games.  Sadly, standouts Zoe Thorpe and team co-captain Melissa Jaskiewicz were unable to play due to illness and injury.

Goalie Kathryn McFarland (as was common throughout the season) had little to do, but when threatened, demonstrated what a talented goalie she is.

The second half brought on a rain of goals in succession, by Warner; Butler (who was so determined that she kicked and re-kicked a deflected ball until she got it past a frustrated goalie); King, who scored her first goal of the season; and with 2 seconds left on the clock, Norris.  With the final score B-CC 6, Seneca Valley 0, the team ended their season with a record of 9-2-0, unofficial champions of the 3A/2A/1A East Division.

Oct. 18: B-CC 2, Clarksburg 0

Hungry to post a win after a disappointing 3-1 defeat by the Whitman JV team, the B-CC girls JV soccer team hit the field on Saturday to face the Clarksburg JV team.  B-CC dominated throughout, and although the score was only 2-0 by game’s end, Clarksburg was unable to put together a credible scoring drive.

Goals were scored by forwards Jess Kehoe and Zoe Thorpe.

Oct. 15: Whitman 3, B-CC 1

Foreboding cloudy skies met with the B-CC and Whitman JV girls soccer teams as they squared off on Wednesday evening. After a long streak of 7 wins, B-CC hoped to continue with a victory over these arch rivals, but it was not meant to be.

B-CC started out fast and furious, controlling the ball after the kick-off, and within the first two minutes made their first attempt on goal with a shot by forward Zoe Thorpe that bounced off the top pipe. Forward Jess Kehoe gained possession immediately and fed it to midfielder Rebecca Wenker, who put it in for a Barons goal. As the girls celebrated their quick dominance, it appeared that the skilled teamwork they had begun to demonstrate would carry the day. However, Whitman rallied quickly and maintained control of the ball and the game for the remainder of the first half. The two teams had been frustrating each other for several minutes when a strong Whitman forward took a shot that rolled right by surprised goalie Kathryn McFarland to tie the score. Over the next 10 minutes, the Whitman offense took advantage of a B-CC midfield that had focused on offense for most of the season and was having trouble switching back to a defensive mode, and scored two more goals in succession to bring the score to 3-1. After that, despite Whitman's ability to dominate the ball and keep it on their offensive side of the field, strong performances by a re-focused midfield, the usual impenetrable defense, and McFarland in particular, brought the half to an end with no further scoring.

Coach Brett DeMunter must have made an impression on the B-CC girls during his halftime talk, because they resumed the field with poise and determination. This time they controlled the ball and the game, and while the action was even, B-CC clearly had the upper hand as they began setting up plays and taking shots that unfortunately missed the mark or were saved by a talented Whitman goalie. Midfielders Tess Hanifee and Elena Muller repeatedly fed the ball to their forward line, and midfielder Katie Carden would not give up, bringing the ball up in front of the goal and then meeting with a tenacious Whitman defense who frustrated her attempts.

Defensive back Helen Petty was everywhere, returning the ball to the midfield whenever a Whitman pass crossed into her territory, and backs Nicole Parina, Amy Heaton, Juliette MacRostie and Nicole Butler all had stand-out second halves. An exhausted B-CC team would not give up, but could not rally to put points on the board. The game ended with the score still 3-1. B-CC returns to the field on Saturday, October 18, where they hope to avenge the tough loss with a victory over Clarksburg.

Oct. 6: B-CC 3, Einstein 0

On yet another glorious fall evening, everything fell in place for the B-CC JV girls, and they played the beautiful game like they really meant it.  The final score of 3-0 belied the domination that they showed, having their way as they executed pass after pass right on the mark and denying the Einstein team the chance to get off a shot for the entire game.

The game began slowly, with cat-and-mouse, as the offense looked for each other and executed short, concise passes.  The Einstein defense was unable to interfere, and several good shots on goal missed their mark as they went wide or high.  Before long, forward Zoe Thorpe passed to midfielder Jess Kehoe, who patiently made her way down the field, controlling the ball and evading her pursuer until she confidently put the ball in the net spot-on to the right of the goalie for the first score.  It looked like she would be followed quickly by forward Lily Berman, whose shot was so on the mark that the spectators were cheering until  it bounced off the top pipe.  This was followed by a determined scrap in front of the Einstein goal with a pass from midfielder Katie Carden to Thorpe, who shot it in only to be deflected by the goalie, then rebounded by midfielder Melissa Jaskiewicz for another goal.  After that, midfielders Tess Hanifee, Rebecca Wenker and Elena Muller (recently returned after a summer injury) traded the ball with each other and their forward line, setting up good opportunities that fell short of being realized.  The ball did trade sides of the field, but Helen Petty on outside defense repeatedly returned it to her waiting offense, and defensive backs Nicole Butler, and Nicole Parina kept any further attempts from being realized.  The only serious threat came when an Einstein forward broke away and had a clear path to goal, but was chased down methodically by defensive center Amy Heaton, who took the ball from her yards from a clear shot.  The half ended shortly after a beautiful goal by Thorpe, drilled into the corner right past the waiting arms of the Einstein goalie.

The second half saw playing opportunities for gutsy forward Shayna Goldsmith, who time after time tenaciously faced an Einstein player and came up with the ball, as well as for forward Krystan Norris, who made a great shot that went inches above the goal and had the stands cheering.  Berman had her second rebound right off the top crossbar, and the defense continued to play soccer rather than "whack-a-ball," as they feinted around their opponents, looking for the opportunistic pass right to a midfielder rather than a shot down the field just to get it out of range.  Goalie Kathryn McFarland watched the game with only an opportunity to take a goal kick once, when Einstein crossed it over the end line.

The game ended with the score 3-0, and a pleased coach Brett DeMunter, as the Barons realized the hard work they had put in and played a game that they could be proud of.

Oct. 1: B-CC 11, Wheaton 0

On a chilly fall evening, the B-CC JV Barons faced a gutsy Wheaton HS team that was only able to field 8 players, including a goalie whose efforts belied the final score.  In an 11-0 match, Coach Brett DeMunter was able to field every player and give the offense an opportunity to flex its muscles.

The game began slowly, with Wheaton piling up players in the back and denying B-CC the chance to score.  After several minutes, Katie Carden broke through to put B-CC on the board with a long shot from the right that went right into the back corner.  As the game continued, the Wheaton goalie continued to be hammered by shot after shot but denied many of them, including well-placed attempts that required outstanding effort to save.  However, the Wheaton defense tired, and the offense was unable to advance, keeping the game on one side of the field and eventually wearing down the short-sided opponent.  Goals were scored by Zoe Thorpe (3), Jess Kehoe (2), Krystan Norris (2), Melissa Jaskiewicz, Sloane Warner, and defensive back Amy Heaton, who scored on a PK that resulted from a hand ball in the box.

Kudos to a determined Wheaton team, who ended the game playing as hard as they started.  B-CC continued its undefeated streak of 5 games to bring their record to 5-1.

Sept. 24: B-CC 2, Paint Branch 1

The game started out in a foreboding manner when the B-CC JV girls were surprised by an aggressive Paint Branch team that drove down the field after the initial kick-off and scored.  However, not to be bested, B-CC immediately answered within minutes when Zoe Thorpe passed to Jess Kehoe, who shot it in for the tying goal.  This was to represent the only scoring action for most of the remainder of the game.

The first half showed an even matchup between the two teams.  Both teams were unable to put together an offense, and attempts on goal were few.  B-CC was lackluster and was not winning the 50-50 balls.  The defense was not particularly challenged, but when called upon, the back line of Nicole Parina, Amy Heaton, Helen Petty and Nicole Butler kept play from advancing towards the goal.

In the second half, B-CC returned to the field with a mission.  Suddenly, they began to dominate play, and the offense showed a spark.  The play stayed on the B-CC half of the field and rarely crossed the midfield line, but shot after shot by Kehoe and Thorpe either met with the Paint Branch goalie or went wide of the goal.  As the clock ticked down, it appeared that the game was destined for a tie; the referee was eying his watch and had whistle in mouth.  Then, with less than 30 seconds left in the game, a frustrated and not-to-be-denied Jess Kehoe drilled a shot in just to the right of the Paint Branch goalie to make the score.

Final:  B-CC 2, Paint Branch 1.  The Barons advanced their record to 4-1.

Sept. 22: B-CC 1, Kennedy 0

On a beautiful fall afternoon, the B-CC JV girls soccer team nearly met their match against a determined Kennedy squad, finally scoring midway through the second half to avert a tie.  The close score did not reflect the dominance of the lady Barons in controlling the ball and getting off shots, but it did demonstrate the frustrations of the offense in converting opportunities to score. Shot after shot was either saved by a busy Kennedy goalie, bounced off a side or upper pipe, or just went a little bit wide.

The team started off with a drive down the field and a shot on goal by Melissa Jaskiewicz within the first several minutes of the game.  The penetration continued all through the first half, with attempts by midfielder Jess Kehoe, a beautiful shot by midfielder Katie Carden that missed by inches when it hit the upper pipe, and another by forward Zoe Thorpe that again missed by inches as it went just wide on the right.  Carden’s play was aggressive, with her winning 50-50s consistently and passing off where she could see open players.  Kehoe was also on the mark with her passing and position.  The defensive line of Juliette MacRostie, Helen Petty, Nicole Parina, and Amy Heaton did an outstanding job of denying the Kennedy squad the opportunity to even get off a shot, and left goalie Kathryn McFarland with little to do during the first half.  The whistle blew at halftime with a score of 0-0.

The second half showed a more determined Kennedy team as they marched down the field several times to take a shot, but McFarland, finally having a job, denied every one.  B-CC continued to dominate in controlling the ball, and before long, Jess Kehoe had a corner kick that was sent down the field and picked up by defensive player Nicole Butler, who hammered it in the goal for the score.  For the remainder of the half, Kennedy was unable to score on a number of corner kicks and penalty shots; one appeared indefensible as it headed high over goalie McFarland’s head, but in a great save she managed to leap and deflect it out of goal as her defense then scrambled to get it away from the net and down the field.

The game ended at 1-0 with B-CC victorious, but knowing that the promise they showed in their ability to control the ball had yet to be reflected in points on the board.

Sept. 19: B-CC 2, Poolesville 1

The B-CC girls JV soccer team walked away from B-CC stadium Friday night smiling after a 2-1 win over Poolesville. Jessica Kehoe put B-CC on the boards early with a goal that she made on a beautiful cross from Zoe Thorpe. After a couple of great opportunities from the Barons, Poolesville responded with a goal, tying the score at 1. Towards the end of the first half, defender Nicole Butler made a chest save to clear the ball off the goal line, denying Poolesville a score.

The Barons continued to keep Poolesville running in the second half. Kehoe made a wonderful corner attempt, but the Poolesville goalie was able to make the save. Midfielders Tess Hanifee, Sarah King, Katie Carden, Melissa Jaskiewicz and Rebecca Wenker repeatedly got the ball to the forwards, Kehoe and Thorpe. Barons goalie Kathryn McFarland played a solid game, aided by the defenders in front of her, including Amy Heaton, Juliette MacRostie, Nicole Parina, Nicole Butler and Helen Petty.

In the middle of the second half, a strong and high shot by Thorpe was batted away, leaving the crowd to wonder if the game might end in a tie. B-CC fans were hopeful of a go-ahead score when Kehoe kicked a shot high; it soared over the visiting team's goalie's head, but bounced off the crossbar. The defending unit shut down some good Poolesville chances, holding them to their lone first half goal. Toward the end of the second half, the home team crowd was excited when they saw Hanifee make a leading pass to Thorpe, who then made the shot that sealed the win.

The win boosts the B-CC JV girls soccer team's record to 2-1 heading into a busy three-game week, beginning with an away game on Monday against Kennedy.

Sept. 15: B-CC 7, Watkins Mill 0

The B-CC junior varsity girls soccer team brought home a resounding 7-0 win against the Watkins Mill JV in a game that gave the entire squad an opportunity to participate.  Within the first two minutes of the starting whistle, winger Lily Berman put the ball in the net and set the tone for the remainder of the match.

Several minutes later against a defense that was not up to the task, forward Zoe Thorpe connected with a shot that was deflected off the goal right into the waiting path of midfielder Jess Kehoe, who then put it in for another point.  In short order, Berman made a right-on pass to Kehoe, who again put the ball in the goal.  Within minutes after the kickoff, forward Shayna Goldsmith passed to Berman for yet another score, and shortly thereafter, with B-CC pressing on the goal, the Watkins Mill goalie deflected a shot from Juliette MacRostie right to the waiting Goldsmith, who rebounded it in for a score.

Such was the domination of the B-CC offense that the ball did not cross the midfield line during the first half, giving defensive backs Nicole Parina and Amy Heaton little to do other than return those few Watkins Mill attempts to move down the field.  The half ended with a score of 5-0.

The second half brought two more goals, one a beautiful shot by midfielder Katie Carden into the upper left corner of the goal, and the other by Jess Kehoe to give her a hat trick for the day.  There were several strong penetrations and a good passing show by forwards Krystan Norris, Goldsmith and Sloane Warner and midfielders Sarah King and Tess Hanifee.  The Watkins Mill offense picked up some spark, and gave the defensive line of Parina, Heaton, Helen Petty and Rebecca Wenker more of a workout, but was unable to put any points on the board.

The game gave a young JV squad the chance to flex its offensive muscles and showed promise for future matches.

Sept. 9: Wootton 4, B-CC 0

After a successful pre-season outing at the Churchill HS play date on August 23 (a close loss to Leonardstown JV and a win against Quince Orchard JV), the B-CC JV girls soccer team suffered a tough loss to the Wootton JV squad in a game where the final score did not reflect the play on the field.

A young team with very few returning players (16 freshmen, 6 sophomores), the Barons held the score to 1-0 until near the end of the second half, showing good defense and a number of credible scoring drives. An aggressive and physical Wootton team drove down the field with many opportunities, only to find a B-CC defensive line that handily returned it to their own offense.

Unfortunately, in the last 7 minutes of the game, the poise of the more polished squad reigned, and the game ended with a final score of 4-0.

Newly recruited coach Brett DeMunter was pleased with the performance of the players and sees yet untapped potential as the season progresses.
