JV Boys Soccer Results

2008 JV Boys Soccer

Game summaries:

Oct. 14: B-CC 5, Seneca Valley 1
Oct. 15: Whitman 3, B-CC 1

Finishing the season with a solid 6-4-1 record overall, 4-1 in the division, Coach Daniel O’Connor’s JV boys soccer squad scored a big road win Tuesday at Seneca Valley, only to suffer a tough home loss Wednesday night against rival Whitman.

It was a team effort all season. Goalies Matt Goubeaux and Griffin Marette made plenty of leaping saves and were mostly impenetrable. The stout back line was anchored by Jake Elsey, Trevor Stephens, Amin Sijelmassi, Dustin Spencer, Scott Bradley, Ghedalia Gold-Pastor, Corentine Olive and Drake Clark. Strikers Cy McNeil and Luc Sebrechts, midfielder Ben Alexander, midfielder/forward Noah Riskind and midfielder Chris Bonilla kept the ball moving with control and supplied plenty of offense. Wingers Max Polan, Eli Miller, Cam Hoffman, Bruno Franco, Chris Rubino and Jimmy Salsbury applied constant pressure and never stopped making runs.

All of that was on display Tuesday night in a 5-1 victory over Seneca Valley, with the outcome never really in doubt. Still, both goalies played well and gathered in some key saves. Goubeaux several times came charging off his line to cut off through balls and send them flying back the other way.

The first goal came on an Alexander free kick on the ground into the box that Riskind back-heeled to Elsey, who slammed it home. The second goal came on a Riskind corner kick that Sebrechts snapped in with a header that flew in high over the Seneca Valley goalie's outstretched arms. The third goal, still in the first half, came after McNeil won the ball and fought off the defender to win a throw in – which McNeil promptly flung to Alexander in the box, who crisply struck another header into the back of the net. The fourth goal came after a B-CC offensive flurry and scrum in the box ended when Spencer slotted the ball into the net. The final goal, for a 5-0 lead, came when Salsbury maneuvered toward the box and lofted a pass to Bonilla, who volleyed it past the Seneca Valley goalie. Seneca Valley scored a goal of its own in the waning minutes of the game, when a free kick from 25 yards out slammed off the cross bar and was headed in by an alert Seneca Valley player.

Goals were in scarcer supply for the JV soccer boys Wednesday night against Whitman in a 3-1 loss. B-CC put itself in a tough spot when a failure to clear balls from the box resulted in two goals by Whitman in the game’s opening 10 minutes and a two-goal halftime deficit. B-CC’s play picked up in the second half, but when another ball was allowed to hang around the box for too long, the result was a 3-0 lead for Whitman. Not long after, though, Stephens slammed home a rocket shot that deflected off a Whitman defender, and plenty of time remained as the JV boys picked up the pace and put on plenty of offensive pressure for the final 15 minutes or so. But B-CC couldn’t convert any more scoring opportunities, and that is how the game ended.

Oct. 6: Einstein 3, B-CC 2

A pair of two-goal deficits proved too large a hole for the B-CC JV soccer boys to climb out of Monday afternoon as they fell 3-2 to a tenacious and skilled Einstein squad.

The B-CC squad gave up two goals early in the first half. The first came just seven minutes in, when an Einstein defender came in from the right side, beat a defender and drilled the ball into the goal. The second came off a free kick just outside the 18-yard line. The ball was drilled into defender Jake Elsey standing as part of the wall, but bounced straight out to an Einstein player – who struck a line drive that Matt Goubeaux did his best to ward off but wound up in the goal.

B-CC didn’t lack for chances, with midfielder/forward Noah Riskind cranking a curving ball that just went over the top left corner of the crossbar, striker Cy McNeil making runs, and midfielder Ben Alexander also taking some good shots. B-CC finally finished when McNeil was brought down in the box, and Alexander slotted home the penalty kick to bring B-CC within a goal at 2-1. It looked like B-CC was going to tie the game up when defender Amin Sijelmassi, winger/midfielder Chris Bonilla, Elsey, Riskind and winger Cam Hoffman combined to get the ball up the field and into the box and then pour on the pressure in a frenetic series that wound up just shy of getting the ball over the line. The Einstein counterattack evaded the B-CC defense, resulting in a header into the B-CC goal and a 3-1 Einstein lead at halftime.

The second half was mostly B-CC controlling the run of play. Alexander, Riskind, wingers Eli Miller and Max Polan, forwards McNeil and Luc Sebrechts, Elsey and defenders Dustin Spencer and Trevor Stephens brought the ball up on the attack again and again. Stephens and Sijelmassi and Elsey came up big several times in cutting off the Einstein forays, as did defender Scott Bradley. About 15 minutes into the half, an attack by, among others, Spencer and Stephens was repelled by Einstein – but when the ball came back out toward the middle, Elsey pounced on it. He maneuvered toward the middle from the left side and then yanked a hard, low shot back across his body, finding the inside of the near post and nestling a great strike inside the corner of the goal. But that is how it ended, a 3-2 loss. Coach Daniel O’Connor’s squad takes a 5-3-1 record into their final two games of the season next week, Tuesday away at Seneca Valley and Wednesday at home against Whitman.

Oct. 4: B-CC 5, Northwood 1

In a game highlighted by winger Chris Rubino's two goals, the JV soccer boys defeated Northwood 5-1 Saturday morning.

It took a while for Coach Daniel O'Connor's squad to find the back of the net in the first half, but the flow of play was nearly all on the Northwood end of the field from the start. Midfielder Chris Bonilla and winger Eli Miller had good shots, and forward/midfielder Noah Riskind was taken down just outside the box, although a foul was called on B-CC as midfielder Ben Alexander took the free kick. The near misses continued with about 18 minutes left in the half when Alexander passed to Riskind coming up the left side, who lofted a centering pass right to forward Cy McNeil's head, but McNeil put the ball just over the top of the crossbar.

The drought ended with about 10 minutes left in the half when McNeil won the ball near the 18 yard line, maneuvered back outside and then hit Alexander in the middle, who hit a cracking strike to put B-CC up 1-0. A few minutes later, defender Trevor Stephens hit McNeil, who delivered with his own goal to bring the tally to 2-0. One of Northwood's only scoring opportunities was denied with 3:30 left in the half when goalie Matt Goubeaux made a diving stop on a free kick. There were more B-CC opportunities in the final minutes of the half and the opening of the second half, as a Riskind free kick skimmed the crossbar from about 25 yards out, a Bonilla volley also just went over the crossbar, and an Alexander strike from 25 yards hit off the bottom of the cross bar and bounced down, but was ruled no goal.

The game broke open early in the second half, though, as McNeil put the ball through to Riskind, who made his run just as the ball was struck, splitting two defenders and carrying the ball ahead before sliding the ball past the goalie from about 15 yards out to put B-CC up 3-0.

Winger Jimmy Salsbury came in and quickly put a good shot on goal, and wingers Max Polan, Bruno Franco and Cam Hoffman and forward Luc Sebrechts also helped apply the pressure. Jake Elsey as always was an anchor of the defense at center back, and also several times moved up to threaten on offense. Stephens, Dustin Spencer, Scott Bradley, Amin Sijelmassi, Drake Clark, Corentine Olive and Ghedalia Gold-Pastor also helped shut down Northwood on defense.

With about nine minutes left in the game, Northwood found an opening in the B-CC defense, and their forward struck a shot from close in that second half goalie Griffin Marette had no chance at stopping. But it wasn't long before Rubino would answer. With B-CC pressing in the Northwood goal area, Rubino cracked a shot into the top left corner of the net to widen the gap again and make the score 4-1. With a few minutes left in the game, a Riskind free kick came into the box from about 30 yards out, and careened around for a few seconds. On the spot again was Rubino, who whipped it into the back of the net for the final score.

The JV soccer boys take a 5-2-1 record, 3-0 in the division, into Monday afternoon's home game against Einstein.

Oct. 1: B-CC 6, Wheaton 0

It was about eight minutes into Wednesday afternoon's JV boys soccer game against Wheaton when the ball flew into the Wheaton box before being deflected out - only to be met by a streaking Chris Bonilla. The midfielder lofted a high, arcing shot from a good 20 or 25 yards out that soared over the goalie's outstretched arms and dropped straight into the netting.

That was the beginning of a 6-0 win, with the outcome never really in doubt. A few minutes after the first B-CC score, forward/midfielder Noah Riskind angled the ball again into the center of the box, where forward Cy McNeil sliced a shot that the Wheaton goalie managed to ward off. But an alert Cam Hoffman coming in from his winger position slammed the ball home, apparently deflecting it off B-CC defender Jake Elsey in the process, to make the score 2-0.

With about 10 minutes left in the first half, midfielder Ben Alexander short kicked a corner kick a couple yards to Riskind, who lofted the ball toward the far post. The Wheaton goalie got a hand on it, but defender Dustin Spencer was on the spot, putting the ball in the back of the net to bring the score to 3-0. A few minutes later, Alexander was brought down in the box. The midfielder got up and proceeded to slot the penalty kick past the Wheaton goalie, leaving B-CC up 4-0 at halftime.

The second half saw B-CC continuing its attack, with wingers/forwards Jimmy Salsbury, Chris Rubino, Max Polan, Luc Sebrechts and Bruno Franco and defenders Elsey, Trevor Stephens, Amin Sijelmassi, Scott Bradley, Corentin Olive and Drake Clark applying more pressure. Rubino got off a tough, low shot, which the Wheaton goalie managed to save. Salsbury, Polan and Franco also made run after run, and B-CC's back line was never seriously breached and did a good job distributing the ball upfield. B-CC's first half goalie, Matt Goubeaux, gave way to Griffin Marette in the second half, with Goubeaux spending some time as a field player in the second half.

But the second half remained scoreless until with about 15 minutes left, midfielder Alexander sent a perfect pass flying over the middle to forward Riskind. With the Wheaton defender on his back, Riskind hit a left-footed shot that curved around the goalie and into the corner of the goal. That brought the score to 5-0.

The final goal was put in by Alexander, who maneuvered with the ball across the top of the goal box and cranked a hard shot past the Wheaton goalie. Coach Daniel O'Connor's squad takes a 4-2-1 record into a matchup Saturday at Northwood.

Sept. 24: B-CC 1, Paint Branch 0

Multiple scoring chances had failed to pan out. Keeper Matt Goubeaux had kept the JV boys soccer squad deadlocked in a scoreless tie with several standout saves to turn away several good Paint Branch free kicks.

With Ben Alexander and Chris Bonilla in the middle, Noah Riskind and Luc Sebrechts up top, wings that included Max Polan, Chris Rubino, Bruno Franco, Cam Hoffman and Eli Miller and a stout back line that included Jake Elsey, Trevor Stephens, Dustin Spencer, Amin Sijelmassi and Scott Bradley, the JV boys controlled the run of the game for most of the match.

Finally, with about five minutes left in the game, an Elsey throw-in towards the Paint Branch box was flicked with a header by Riskind to Miller, who hit a crisply struck, sharp volley into the back of the goal for the 1-0 win Wednesday night at Paint Branch. Coach Daniel O'Connor's team takes a 3-2-1 record into Saturday's game at Seneca Valley.

Sept. 19: Kennedy 2, B-CC 0

A first half that saw an opportunistic Kennedy forward twice break behind the B-CC defense and deliver two near-perfect strikes that curled inside the top far post did the damage Saturday as a three-game unbeaten stretch came to an end for Coach Daniel O'Connor's JV boys soccer squad.

The B-CC boys came out much stronger in the second half, applying offensive pressure, controlling the ball more and giving up fewer chances to their opponent. But B-CC failed to convert, and the game ended at a 0-2 deficit for the home team.

The team takes a 2-2-1 record into Wednesday's contest at Paint Branch.

Sept. 17: B-CC 4, Clarksburg 1

A frustrating first half saw the B-CC JV boys soccer squad squander numerous scoring chances and hit a couple of crossbars before giving up a late goal to Clarksburg. But then came a second half full of fine finishes - and ultimately a 4-1 victory.

Coach Daniel O'Connor's team had to be frustrated after concluding its third consecutive half without a goal, with Wednesday night's home game following Monday's scoreless tie against a tough Watkins Mill squad. But the JV boys regrouped at halftime and came out roaring in the second half. Less than seven minutes in, defender Jake Elsey slid the ball on a free kick to midfielder Ben Alexander, who made a couple of moves to maneuver closer and whipped the ball into the box. Waiting was winger Max Polan, who snapped a header past the Clarksburg goalie, and the drought was over.

A few minutes later, midfielder Chris Bonilla kept up the pressure with a good shot. The ball quickly was sent back to the Clarksburg end, with Alexander steering a pass up to striker Cy McNeil, who battled past several defenders to get off a shot that bounced around near the goal. On the spot was forward Luc Sebrechts, who put the ball in the back of the net, just five minutes after the first score.

Midfielders Alexander and Noah Riskind wouldn't let up on Clarksburg, both passing the ball up to forwards and driving in some shots of their own.

With less than 15 minutes left in the game, an Alexander shot handcuffed the goalie, and again Sebrechts was there to finish, bringing the score to 3-1.

With time running out, Riskind brought the ball back through the middle, with the ball going to McNeil up top. The striker moved across the top of the box, evaded a defender and drilled in the final goal of the game.

It was a full team effort, with Matt Goubeaux playing well in goal and then giving way to an equally strong second-half performance by Griffin Marette. Elsey, Dustin Spencer, Trevor Stephens and Amin Sijelmassi helped form a stalwart back line. Meanwhile, Cam Hoffman at forward and Chris Rubino, Bruno Franco, Drake Clark and Jimmy Salsbury contributed valuable minutes on the wing, as did Corentine Olive and Ghedalia Gold-Pastor on defense. Goubeaux also came back out for a spell, but as a field player, not a goalie.

The win boosts the B-CC JV boys soccer team's record to 2-1-1 heading into Saturday's home matchup against Kennedy.

Sept. 15: B-CC 0, Watkins Mill 0 (OT)

A tough, physical game with spurts of furious action interspersed with periods of stalled play resulted in a scoreless overtime tie Wednesday between Coach Daniel O'Connor's JV boys soccer squad and Watkins Mill.

There were no real chances for either side for the first 10 minutes of the game, but then B-CC took control and forced a series of five corner kicks within a few minutes. On one, midfielder Ben Alexander lofted the ball just in front of the goal, with winger Max Polan getting a foot on it but sending it just over the top of the crossbar. Polan also was quick to the ball on another chance, getting a head on a corner by midfielder Noah Riskind, but the Watkins Mill goalie got a hand on it, sending it back over the crossbar.

On several corner kicks during the game, the ball was played short to Alexander, who slipped by defenders as he came down the end line, setting up good chances for teammates.

Watkins Mill had its chances in the first half, as well. A through ball went over the middle and deep into B-CC territory for a near breakaway.

Goalie Max Goubeaux came out in an attempt to apply pressure, and defender Jake Elsey cut across the middle and erased the danger. On another Watkins Mill opportunity, defender Trevor Stephens did a nice job holding off a fast Watkins Mill striker breaking on a long pass, taking the ball and sending it back the other way in a play that resulted in yet another B-CC corner.

Also playing well during the first half were Cam Hoffman, who started at striker and moved to defense, defenders Scott Bradley and Amin Sijelmassi, winger Eli Miller and forward Luc Sebrechts.

The beginning of the second half saw B-CC back on its heels for the first 10 minutes, but defender Dustin Spencer was among a back line that helped goalie Goubeaux hold off Watkins Mill. The momentum turned again, with B-CC keeping the ball on the ground and taking possession as it drove back into Watkins Mill territory. Riskind struck a free kick from about 30 yards out that found Miller's foot. The winger volleyed the ball crisply, but the goalie dove for a nice save. B-CC continued to apply pressure about 15 minutes into the half. Striker Cy McNeil won the ball on the right side, evaded a defender and drove the ball toward the far post – only to see the Watkins Mill goalie come up big again and leap to deflect the ball over the end line.

As wingers Chris Rubino and Bruno Franco and defender Ghedalia Gold-Pastor helped keep the heat on Watkins Mill, a corner kick by Riskind was slammed in by Elsey, only to be disallowed, with the referee ruling it had struck a B-CC hand amid the crush in the box. With just over 11 minutes left on the clock in regulation, Alexander hit a free kick that soared just wide, and Franco too had a chance on a ball coming down the right side. With less than two minutes left in regulation, McNeil sprinted for a through ball into the box, but he and the scrappy Watkins Mill goalie got there at the same time, with the goalie managing to hold on to the ball and send the game into overtime.

Two five-minute overtime periods yielded several more B-CC corner kicks and chances. Watkins Mill also drove the ball forward a couple times but failed to finish as well.

Sept. 11: B-CC 2, Poolesville 0

After a tense, back and forth, scoreless first half, Coach Daniel O'Connor's JV boys soccer squad registered its first win of the young season Thursday by ratcheting up the pressure and tallying two second-half goals.

The 2-0 victory featured some efficient passing and hard runs. Goalie Matt Goubeaux and the defenders in front of him – including Jake Elsey, Dustin Spencer, Scott Bradley, Ghedalia Gold-Pastor and Trevor Stephens – shut down some good Poolesville chances, especially off corner kicks and a couple runs down the side. In the second half, Gold-Pastor's diving header to clear the ball off the goal line likely denied Poolesville a score, and Elsey, Spencer, Stephens and Bradley cut off a number of Poolesville runs throughout the game.

Midfielders Ben Alexander, Noah Riskind and Chris Bonilla did a good job distributing the ball, with Alexander flying in some threatening free kicks, and winger Eli Miller and forward Cy McNeil making some good runs. But several decent first half chances for B-CC were denied by Poolesville.

The B-CC boys came out surging in the second half, with Coach O'Connor moving Riskind up top to pair with striker Cy McNeil. Luc Sebrechts, Cam Hoffman, Max Polan, Amin Sijelmassi, Bruno Franco, Chris Rubino, Jimmy Salsbury and Corentine Olive also helped apply the pressure.

But the game remained deadlocked until late in the second half, with less than 10 minutes to go, when Hoffman hit Riskind in the middle of the box. A shot that careened off the goalie went to an alert and on-the-spot Bonilla, who slotted a hard shot into the back of the net. A few minutes later, McNeil evaded several defenders in the corner near the Poolesville end line and slanted a pass to Riskind in front of the goal, who finished with a low shot that sealed the win.

Sept. 9: Wootton 2, B-CC 0

After the team's scheduled first game of the season versus Clarksburg was washed out by Hannah on Saturday, the JV boys soccer team confronted a physical, athletic Wootton squad on Tuesday, losing 2-0.

The game was scoreless after the first half, with both teams having chances and taking turns applying pressure. The second half saw more of the same, before the ball stayed in B-CC's goal area too long without being cleared. Goalie Matt Goubeaux, who came up big a number of times, stretched for another save - but the Wootton shot was a good one, putting B-CC down by one.

Midfielders Ben Alexander and Noah Riskind distributed the ball nicely, although both found time and space at a premium against an aggressive Wootton defense. Alexander went down with a few minutes left in the game after the last in a string of tough take-downs of the sophomore. Defenders Jake Elsey and Dustin Spencer repeatedly cut off Wootton runs, and Max Polan, Eli Miller, Cam Hoffman and Trevor Stephens were just some of the B-CC players making good runs of their own.

Coach Daniel O'Connor's squad ran hard for all 70 minutes. B-CC had some good chances to tie it up, with striker Cy McNeil just putting it over the crossbar after angling in toward the goal and Spencer flying it in from about 30 yards out, lofting it over the Wootton goalie's outstretched arms but also just over the crossbar.

The B-CC boys went forward more and more in the game's final minutes in the effort to tie up the game. But Wootton counterattacked quickly on a goal kick, penetrating a pressing B-CC defense to score its final goal.

The B-CC JV boys team will be looking to regroup Thursday when it travels to Poolesville.
