May 21, Gazette: Gymnastics: B-CC does it again

Bethesda-Chevy Chase High’s quest for a second straight state gymnastics meet title last Wednesday couldn’t have started off much worse, but the finish was exactly what the Barons wanted.

Paced by its superior depth and its resiliency, B-CC regrouped in time to hold off runner-up Walter Johnson to retain their crown.

The tough start began before the meet officially started as key all-around performer Steph Golob broke and dislocated her toe during warm-ups. Then the Barons had five girls fall during their first event rotation on the balance beam. Despite those mishaps, B-CC edged Walter Johnson, 176.45-173.7, and cruised past Anne Arundel County entrants Chesapeake (152.7) and Broadneck (149.1) at Arundel High School in Gambrills.

‘‘It would have been easy to give up, but the girls worked really hard,” said Barons coach Dana Creager, whose squad has won three state championships since 2004. ‘‘Ebony Walters and senior captain Katie Pelton both had a great meet, which really helped pull us through. Winning the state championships two years in a row is a testament to every girl on the team this year. They worked hard at every practice this year and in every single meet to compete with the best routines possible.”

Walters, a Level 10 gymnast who competes for MarVa Teens in Rockville, continued the previous week’s dominance at the county meet, where she won the all-around, by capturing the state all-around title with a score of 38.25. Walter Johnson’s Shannon Mitchell (37.9), Blake’s Danae Johnson (37.3) and Nicole Williams (37.05), Springbrook’s Hannah Brande (36.7) and Sherwood’s Alexa Banda (36.325) placed second through sixth, respectively. Johnson had won the previous two state all-around crowns.

Walters, a sophomore, wrested away Johnson’s stranglehold on first place by capturing the vault (9.875), balance beam (9.55) and floor exercise (9.575) titles. She also placed fifth on the uneven bars with a score of 9.25. Pelton placed in top six of three of the four events, taking fourth on the uneven bars (9.3) and the balance beam (9.275) and fifth on vault (9.2).

‘‘I am so happy for the girls and that all of their hard work paid off in the end,” Creager said. ‘‘Winning the division, county and state, and scoring over 180 in three meets this year, I don’t think we could have asked for a better season.”

May 15, Post: Barons' Walters Wins County Title

A onetime club gymnast, Ebony Walters gave up the rigorous training that goes along with competing for a club team when she entered Bethesda-Chevy Chase as a freshman.

But in the past year, as a sophomore, Walters returned to club competition with Marva Teens in Rockville, and as a Level 10 no less, just one level below elite status.

"She wanted back in," Barons Coach Dana Creager said.

Those increased skills and extra hours in the gym paid off on the high school level last Thursday, when Walters won the all-around competition (38.25) at the Montgomery County championships. She edged Danae Johnson of Blake by less than two-tenths of a point.

Her victory prevented Johnson from winning a fourth straight Montgomery County crown.

Walter Johnson freshman Shannon Mitchell finished third (37.1), followed by Blake junior Nicole Williams (37.0).

Walters won two of the four individual events, capturing balance beam with a 9.5 and floor exercise (where she landed a difficult front handspring-front layout) with a 9.65.

"I think floor was my best event and I love doing it. That bumped my score up a little bit," said Walters, who said she felt a "little bit" of pressure knowing that Johnson was going for a four-year sweep.

Danae Johnson, who will compete for Rutgers next year, won the vault competition with the highest score of the meet: 9.825. Williams won the uneven bars with 9.55.

Bethesda-Chevy Chase also won the county team title for the second straight season, capturing the meet with a county-record score of 180.85. Walter Johnson placed second with 179.95, followed by Sherwood, Blake, Blair and Springbrook.

May 14, Gazette: B-CC’s Walters knocks Blake’s Johnson off gymnastics throne

A new queen was crowned during last Thursday’s Montgomery County Public Schools gymnastics meet at Bethesda-Chevy High School.

After sweeping the county and state all-around championships the past two seasons as a sophomore and junior, Blake senior Danae Johnson, the two-time Gazette Gymnast of the Year, was forced to relinquish her throne, at least at the county level, to Bethesda-Chevy Chase’s Ebony Walters. The sophomore placed first or second in all four events to end Johnson’s reign en route to the county all-around championship, producing a meet-best score of 38.25. Her efforts also helped B-CC retain the county team title it won last year.

‘‘[Johnson’s] really good so I’m happy with myself,” Walters said. ‘‘I think I performed my best this year. I had a good season. It was fun ... .”

Walters, a Level 10 gymnast who competes for MarVa Teens in Rockville, squeaked by Johnson, who finished with a 38.1. She did so with a strong overall performance that included placing first on both the balance beam (9.5) and the floor exercise (9.65), while Johnson placed fifth on the balance beam (9.3) and second on the floor exercise (9.625).

‘‘I did my best,” said Johnson, who will compete for Rutgers University on scholarship next fall. ‘‘There’s always somebody better than you. I’m pretty happy knowing I did my best. I’m just excited about going to college next year.”

Walters, who took 10th in the all-around a year ago, also took second on vault to Johnson (9.825 to 9.675) and on the uneven bars to Blake’s Nicole Williams (9.55 to 9.425).

‘‘She had stopped competing for her club team before ninth grade and last year she competed for us in high school and kind of decided to get back into it,” said B-CC coach Dana Creager of Walters. ‘‘I think the year break was good for her. She started back at MarVa Teens as soon as the gymnastic season was over last year.

‘‘She competed year round ... so of course being back in the gym training full-time [helped this season]. She’s a competitive girl. She wants to come out and do well. I think really brought it tonight. She did a couple of skills she hadn’t been doing earlier this year. She did great.”

Walters’ performance coupled with strong showings from Whitney Boross (35.975, 6th in the all-around), Steph Golob (34.75, 10th), Lydia Marks (33.6, 15th) and Katie Pelton (27.475, 24th) propelled the Barons to first place for the second straight year with a new county record of 180.85.

Walter Johnson placed second again with a score of 172.95 followed by Sherwood (167.125), Blake (162.625), Blair (151.4) and Springbrook (139.3). Both B-CC and Walter Johnson qualified for Wednesday’s state meet at Arundel High in Gambrills. The Barons won their second state title overall last year.

‘‘It’s exciting because we all worked really hard to get there,” Pelton said. ‘‘So it was nice for all the work to pay off.” ...

BETHESDA-CHEVY CHASE: Sophomore Ebony Walters finished first on balance beam (9.5) and floor exercise (9.65) and won the all-around title Thursday at the Montgomery County gymnastics championships with a four-event score of 38.25. Walters finished second on vault to Blake's Denae Johnson (9.825) and second on bars to Blake's Nicole Williams (9.55). Both teams advanced to the Maryland championships at Arundel on Wednesday.

May 8, DigitalSports.com: B-CC Wins 2nd Straight Girls Gymnastics County Championship

Barons set school and county record with 180.850; Walter Johnson places second with 172.950

In the 15-minute timespan between the end of the Montgomery County girls gymnastics championship meet and the awards ceremony, Bethesda-Chevy Chase coach Dana Creager had one objective in mind - keep her team from finding out what she already knew:

The Barons had won the meet, set a county record and successfully defended their championship.

Since B-CC was the host school, Creager was the first to know the results. She also was the emcee of the evening and announced them to the teams and crowd watching on - objectively.

Creager kept a straight face during the announcement, but when she read off the final scores, the B-CC girls erupted after hearing their record 180.850 total. For the second consecutive season, the Barons won the county championship.

"I'm very excited because I knew we had the talent to do it," Creager said. "It was just a matter of making sure that we had a good meet. We have a lot of talent this year, and we'll have a lot of talent back next year."

B-CC cruised past the other five schools, much like it had done throughout its undefeated regular season. Walter Johnson (172.950) placed second and Sherwood (167.125) rounded out the top three. Blake (162.625), Blair (151.400) and Springbrook (139.300) also competed in the meet.

The Barons' graduating seniors are hoping the back-to-back titles have laid the groundwork for long-term success in the county.

"We definitely all worked really hard at practice," B-CC senior Katie Pelton said. "So it's nice for all of us. I think we definitely set a standard of not just winning championships, but working hard. It didn't just come to us, so it's expected of the girls to work hard."

B-CC and Walter Johnson will meet again next week at the state tournament, and if the Barons perform as well as they did on Thursday, they'll be near impossible to beat. Last year, three points separated B-CC, Walter Johnson and Blake. This year, it was a much bigger margin.

"It was great for us to be able to get second place," Walter Johnson coach Jill Neustadt said. "We lost to B-CC in the regular season, so we kind of expected them to come out ahead."

B-CC was led by Ebony Walters, who won the balance beam and floor exercise events and placed second in the vault and uneven bars. It was enough to give her first place in the all around with a score of 38.250. Walters just edged out Blake's Danae Johnson, who scored a 38.100 all around.

Johnson and Nicole Williams won the vault and uneven bars, respectively.

"I didn't really expect it," Walters said. "All of us are good gymnasts here, and I compete against them out of school, so I know what skills they have."

May/June Banter: B-CC GYMNASTICS SETS NEW SCORING RECORD

By Gail Troussoff Marks

B-CC Gymnastics won the County and State Championships in 2007 and anticipate another strong season – especiallly after winning their first two meets. At the first meet, a tri-meet with Springbrook and Sherwood, B-CC set new school and County records, scoring 180.3 team points. Montgomery County gymnastics is highly competitive and B-CC has the advantage of great depth, which is what carried them to the State Championship last year. In a sport based on individual performances, the B-CC team functions as a team with camaraderie, helpfulness, and team spirit.

The 2008 B-CC gymnasts are seniors Katie Pelton and Kim Howard; juniors Imogen Bradbury, Lara Magill, and Lauren Beck; sophomores Ebony Walters, Steph Golob, Lydia Marks, Allegra Barnes, Abby Klein, and Krysta Sing. Freshmen joining the team this year are Julie Siegel, Stephanie Turner, and Whitney Boross.

Come cheer the B-CC gymnasts as B-CC hosts the County Championships on May 8th at 5:30 PM in the main gym.

History: B-CC Gymnastics enters its 8th season. In the first season (2001) the team placed 6th in the county, quickly moved up to 3rd in 2002, and went to the State Competition in 2003, placing 2nd. The following year, B-CC won the State title and set a new County record of 176.95 team points. In 2007, B-CC won the County and State Championships and Coach Dana Creager was named Gazette gymnastics "Coach of the Year."

Apr. 23, Gazette: Gymnasts still a perfect 10

The Bethesda-Chevy Chase gymnastics team continued its run of perfection with a dual meet win over Blair last Thursday, upending the Blazers, 172.75-151.7. All-around performances of sophomores Ebony Walters and Steph Golob and freshmen Whitney Boross and Julie Siegel led the Barons (4-0).

Walters placed first in the all-round competition with a 37.8 followed by Boross (34.5), Golob (34.35) and Siegel (34.2). Walters placed first on vault (9.8), the balance beam (9.5) and the floor exercise (9.5) and tied for first with Boross for first place on uneven bars with scores of 9.0. Besides tying Walters for first on the uneven bars, Boross also took second on the floor exercise (9.0) and took fifth on vault (8.5).

Apr. 9, Gazette: Expect another close race for county gymnastics

The race for the Montgomery County Public Schools gymnastics title was extremely tight last spring. A mere three points separated the top three teams: Bethesda-Chevy Chase, Walter Johnson and Blake.

With all three of those rivals returning and adding numerous talented gymnasts, this year’s chase for top honors could be even more thrilling.

B-CC, which won the county and state meets a year ago, showed it is ready to defend those crowns with a county-high 180.3-point performance to open the season last Thursday against Sherwood (168.5) and Springbrook (153.6). Sophomores Ebony Walters (37.65) and Steph Golob (37.0) and senior Katie Pelton (35.45), took first, second and fifth place, respectively, in the all-around at that meet.

Those three will lead a talented group that also includes all-around gymnasts Lydia Marks (sophomore), Whitney Boross (freshman) and Julie Seigel (freshman).

‘‘We’ll miss Abbie Klein and Lara Magill, who are out this season with injuries, but we still have a very good team,” said B-CC coach Dana Creager. ‘‘The girls have worked hard in the offseason and are ready to compete.” ...

May 24, 2007, Post: Led by Their Busy Coach, The Barons Wear the Crown

Only once has Dana Creager's rugby career interfered with her job as the gymnastics coach at Bethesda-Chevy Chase. It was last season, when she received an unusual phone call.

"They needed me to go to Hong Kong," Creager said.

She hopped on the first plane available, but only after rescheduling a meet that weekend. Creager was needed by the U.S. national team, on which she has played since 2003. Aside from Hong Kong, her rugby career has brought her to five continents, including the Netherlands, Brazil and New Zealand.

Creager's busy life outside of B-CC has hardly affected her work with the gymnastics team. Last week, the Barons won their second Maryland gymnastics championship. Creager, 33, helped start the program in 2001, and it has flourished since.

"It started as just a couple girls," B-CC Activities Director Tim Gilmore said. "Now it's expected that the team does well."

Creager, an athlete for much of her life, started playing rugby when she was at North Carolina State. She was drawn to the physical challenges it presented. "The competitiveness and the pace of the game really attracted me," she said. "And the contact -- I liked that, too."

Rugby occupies Creager year-round. When she's not playing with the national team, she's training. Her regimen includes running, agility training and weight lifting. She also swims and bikes regularly.

It's a wonder she has time left for her coaching duties, which include gymnastics, volleyball and indoor track at B-CC. She also teaches calculus and algebra. "I would say I lead a pretty active life," Creager said.

She developed a love of sports while growing up in Downers Grove, Ill., and Clemmons, N.C. Her first athletic idol was Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton -- Creager named her Great Dane-black Labrador mix Payton. And she cultivated her ability by battling with her two siblings in sports including basketball and football.

Initially, she started coaching gymnastics when she moved to the area and needed to find part-time work. With interest high at B-CC, but no team to speak of, Creager spearheaded a campaign to bring gymnastics to the school. She helped sell cookie dough and pizza, and presided over carwashes to raise money for the team.

In 2004, the Barons won their first state title. This year's championship came with only two seniors. B-CC was led by freshman Ebony Walters -- who placed fifth in the all-around at states -- and junior Katie Pelton.

"We've had a lot of success with getting the girls to come out and keep it fun and competitive," Creager said. "I think with the small number of juniors and seniors we have that we should able to keep the program going strong."

Creager continues to challenge herself athletically. She recently started competing in Adventure Races, arduous events that combine trail running, biking and sometimes swimming. With a physically intense schedule outside of gymnastics, its not unusual for Creager to come to practice sporting plenty of bumps and bruises.

"I'm always looking for new challenges," she said. "It's definitely been exciting."

Meet reports:

May 15: Maryland State Championship

B-CC gymnasts traveled to Arundel High School in Gambrills, MD, for the State High School Gymnastic Meet on Thursday, May 14. Representing Montgomery County were 1st place team B-CC and 2nd place team WJ, along with a Montgomery County All-Star team. The All-Star team was made up of gymnasts from schools other than B-CC or WJ who placed in the top 3 All Around and the top 3 individual event winners not including the top 3 All Arounders. Anne Arundel had an All-Star team plus Broadneck and Chesapeake High Schools.

Ebony Walters (at left with Coach Dana Creager) emerged as the 1st Place All Around Gymnast in the State with 38.25 points. Katie Pelton had a great final meet as a senior, placing 8th with 35.825 points.

B-CC took 1st place in the State with a team score of 176.45. Walter Johnson placed 2nd with 173.7 points, Chesapeake placed 3rd with 152.7, and Broadneck placed 4th with 149.1 points.

B-CC’s first event was Balance Beam. Sophomore Steph Golob fell in warmup on beam, injuring her toe and forcing her to pull out of the evening’s competition. This was B-CC’s first start on beam of the season. Sophomore Ebony Walters placed 1st on Beam with 9.55. Senior Katie Pelton placed 4th with 9.275. Senior Kim Howard scored 8.6.

Uneven Parallel Bars was B-CC’s next event. The bar set at Arundel was lower than that used at B-CC and most other gyms, so the competitors had to make adjustments. Katie Pelton placed 4th with 9.3, and Ebony Walters placed 5th with 9.25. Freshman Julie Siegel scored 8.6, Whitney Boross 8.45, Lydia Marks 8.35, and Allegra Barnes 6.7.

Vault was a much stronger event for B-CC. Ebony Walter’s handspring front placed 1st with 9.875, Katie Pelton’s Tsuk placed 5th with 9.2, and Whitney Boross’s Tsuk placed 6th with 9.1. Lara Magill scored 8.7, Lydia Marks scored 8.575, and Kim Howard scored 8.2.

B-CC was the last rotation to compete on Floor. Ebony Walters placed 1st with 9.575. Whitney Boross scored 9.2 on Floor and just missed placing. Julie Siegel scored 8.5, Lara Magill 8.1, Katie Pelton 8.05, and Lydia 7.7.

B-CC Gymnastics has been undefeated since 2006. With only 2 seniors graduating, next year should also promise some great gymnastics.

Other All Around competitors were sophomores Steph Golob (34.75) and Lydia Marks (33.6).  Freshman Julie Siegel competed in 3 events with a 9th place tie with Steph Golob for Floor (9.05).

The County Championship meet was a high energy meet with many excellent performances. Since its beginning in 2001, B-CC Gymnastics has managed to have great depth in experienced gymnasts.  This year the depth of competitive gymnasts is fantastic and led to 3 meets with team scores of 180, all of which surpassed the previous record of 177.1.

Come cheer on B-CC’s gymnasts at the State Championship meet on Wednesday, May 14, at Arundel High School, starting at 5:30.
