JV Field Hockey Results

2007 JV Field Hockey

Game reports:

Sept. 27: B-CC 6, Rockville 0

Thursday the Barons ended the streak of 3-0 games which began in their first outing at Holton-Arms on Sept. 5. They did so at home and in dashing style – doubling the 3 to defeat Rockville 6-0. “It was a great game,” Coach Brooke Molnar said afterward, praising the team’s “wonderful passing patterns” and “beautiful finishes.”

Five of B-CC ’s goals came in the first half, on shots by Rebecca Natoli (assisted by co-captain Rachel Keeling), Lindsay Chan, Celia Garrity, Alicia Veith, and Rachel Ruda. Throughout the first half Rockville showed great sportsmanship and determination despite the lopsided score, in a game played under a clear light-blue sky fringed by sun-dappled clouds that recalled the canvasses of the great landscapists of Holland’s Golden Age.

Rockville rebounded in the second half, allowing only one B-CC goal, scored by Rachel Keeling off a corner in the sixteenth minute. Rockville otherwise kept the Barons in check for much of the half, earning the admiration of all present for their dogged defense in the face of daunting odds.

The JV Barons’ next game is Wednesday, October 3, at 5 p.m. at Winston Churchill H.S.

Sept. 25: Poolesville 3, B-CC 0

Continuing its unbroken streak of five 3-0 games (both wins and losses), the JV field hockey team lost to an excellent Poolesville High School squad on Tuesday afternoon. Poolesville played top-notch hockey on both offense and defense, but our girls fought the good fight with Churchillian grit, particularly in the second half. Coach Brooke Molnar summed it up well: "It was a tough loss, but we were able to turn the second half into a competitive game."

The Barons started the game with two sophomore varsity players, Sunny Cobb and Kelsey Kiser, in for injured JV players. The game was memorable not least for its bucolic setting: a landscape more Vermont than Montgomery that left some B-CC parents musing wistfully of vacation homes as they watched a stunning full moon follow a bright orange sunset, while never taking their eyes off the field of play for a single moment.

Although the Barons started on the offensive, Poolesville scored in the fourth minute on a breakaway and again five minutes later. But the Barons showed stoutness of heart as Sunny Cobb and co-captain Lara Bes, joined by Jenn Dewey and Josie Lopes, repeatedly tried move the game onto Pooleville’s side of the field but were unable to overcome our host’s strong defense.

Other B-CC highlights in the first half were excellent passes and defensive moves by co-captain Ruth Andrews, and a good attack in the 21st minute by Rachel Ruda and Kelsey Kiser. And with two minutes left in the half goalie Michelle Hugonnet brought joy to Barons fans with a spectacular save.

In the second half B-CC got its sea-legs, as co-captain Rachel Keeling and Rachel Natoli played outstanding defense. Although Poolesville scored its third and final goal in the third minute, for the remainder of the half the Barons controlled the game. Lindsay Chan and Lara Bes did their best to get B-CC onto the scoreboard -- and very nearly succeeded with a disallowed goal following one of the Barons’ five corners.

Sept. 18: B-CC 3, Richard Montgomery 0

Diehard Barons fans who ran the gauntlet of Bethesda’s rush-hour traffic were rewarded with an outstanding performance by the JV field hockey team on Wednesday afternoon, as B-CC defeated Richard Montgomery H.S. by 3-0. Coach Brooke Molnar praised the team’s “great passing” and “excellent communication” on the field, which led to “wonderful scoring opportunities” and “splendid finishing.”

B-CC got onto the scoreboard in the eighth minute of the first half, when sophomore Rachel Ruda evaded numerous defenders in a protracted (but genteel) melee in front of Richard Montgomery’s goal. Less than three minutes later sophomore Lindsay Chan neatly finished a B-CC corner in a game played in flawless early-autumn weather in anything-but-bucolic downtown Bethesda.

Richard Montgomery responded with an offensive effort late in the first half that was deflected by the Barons and morphed into a B-CC drive that nearly led to a third goal. Freshman Alicia Veith was a standout defender at this critical juncture and throughout the game. Alicia kept the Barons on offense by defusing numerous Richard Montgomery attacks and rocketing the ball back to our opponent’s side of the field. Also standouts on defense were Co-captains Ruth Andrews and Rachel Keeling.

The second half began with a revved-up Richard Montgomery team playing heads-up hockey and pressing towards our goal. Alicia once again rose to the occasion, stealing the ball from a Montgomery forward and air-mailing it back to the other side of the field.

The Barons scored again in the tenth minute of the second half, when Rachel Ruda got two-thirds of a hat trick, lifting the score to 3-0. Our spirited opponents nonetheless stayed well in the game, playing good defense and launching numerous attacks into B-CC territory up until the final whistle.

Once again B-CC freshmen showed remarkable promise, particularly in the last 12 minutes of the second half when all but three of the Barons on the field were freshmen.

Frosh goalie Maddie Hugonnet deserves special mention for an outstanding debut during which, skillfully aided by defender Ruth Andrews and Co-captain Lara Bes, she rarely broke a sweat despite Richard Montgomery’s offensive drives. When asked after the game how it felt to play a full 50 minutes in the goal, Maddie declined to pander to media scoundrels and replied simply, “I liked it.” Final score: B-CC 3, R.M.H.S. 0

The JV Barons’ next game is Tuesday, September 25, at 5:30 p.m. at Poolesville H.S.

Sept. 10: Good Counsel 3, B-CC 0

Two days after the JV's win over Blair, the breaks went the other way, as Good Counsel High School hosted B-CC at its impressive new campus in the nether reaches of Montgomery County. As they say, “this was a game of two halves.”

In the first half B-CC dominated except for a breakaway goal by Good Counsel in the fourth minute. The Barons retained possession and were on the offensive for 20 of the half’s 25 minutes, with excellent play by sophomores Rachel Ruda and Meredith Storm. B-CC’s offensive pressure brought it a corner in the eleventh minute, played by Co-captain Lara Bes. Despite a keen whack from Lara, the Barons were unable to score. A free hit from the sideline a few seconds later also failed to yield a goal, but enabled sophomores Josie Lopez and Lydia Marks to make a good showing on offense.

Sophomores Katie Bazyluk and Co-captain Ruth Andrews provided good defensive support for the remainder of the first half. The half closed with an offensive surge by Good Counsel that enabled goalie Lauren Serpan to showcase her goalkeeping skills. In the waning minutes of the half, Lindsay Chan, Lydia Marks and freshman Jen Dewey kept the heat on Good Counsel’s defense, but at halftime B-CC were still down one goal.

In the second half Good Counsel took control and scored two more goals on breakaways. B-CC’s defense saw most of the action, particularly freshman Alicia Veith, along with Ruth Andrews and Meredith Storm, who all made key clearances. Lara Bes also hounded Good Counsel’s offense with her unrelenting hustle, aided by freshman Rachel Natoli.

On offense, Lindsay Chan, Rachel Keeling, and Lydia Marks mounted a drive in the seventeenth minute that showed excellent passing skills and promised to yield fruit. Near game’s end freshman Celia Garrity joined the play and made several excellent passes to the offensive line which nearly got the Barons into the scoring column.

Sept. 8: B-CC 3, Blair 0

The JV field hockey team racked up its second win in a row last Saturday, defeating Blair High School at home by 3-0 in an outing marked by consistently strong offense but relatively few goals. As Coach Kate Finn put it, “B-CC had several opportunities to score and only capitalized on the offensive three times.” In an augury of good things to come, however, the coach added that “we saw some good playing by the freshmen.”

In searing late-summer heat that left spectators pining for pith helmets, B-CC started off strong with two corners in the first five minutes. Rachel Keeling, Lindsay Chan and Josie Lopes sustained the attack, with Josie scoring in the ninth minute.

The Barons retained possession for most of the first half. Strong defensive play by Ruth Andrews, Lara Bes, Katie Bazyluk and sweeper Natalie Joslin gave goalie Lauren Serpan a busperson’s holiday. After a timeout in the fifteenth minute, freshman Jen Dewey and sophomore Rachel Ruda jump-started the offense and Jen scored with less than five minutes remaining in the half.

Blair mounted an attack at the start of the second half but failed to capitalize, with B-CC freshman Katie Webster a standout on defense. Within five minutes B-CC returned to the attack in a drive that led to freshman Rebecca Natolie’s goal for the Barons. But excitement for B-CC remained in store -- with only a minute to go Ruth Andrews launched a rocket that narrowly missed pay dirt and brought B-CC fans (aka parents) to their feet. Freshman Julie Michon showed grit on offense in the game’s closing minutes.

Sept. 5: B-CC 3, Holton-Arms 0

In what Coach Brooke Molnar called a "wonderful team effort," the JV field hockey team was on the offensive for most of the game in a 3-0 victory over host Holton-Arms School in their first match of the season on Wednesday.

Forward Lydia Marks scored two goals in the first half, assisted in the first by Josie Lopes and in the second by Ruth Andrews. Midfielder Lara Bes, assisted by Rachel Ruda, added a third goal in the second half to cap the win, played on a beautiful late summer afternoon on a magnificent Holton hockey pitch that recalled the famed playing fields of Eton.

The Barons dominated play from the beginning, with a total of eight corners to Holton's one. Throughout the game co-captain Ruth Andrews provided "great leadership on both offense and defense," Coach Molnar said, and led a squad of standout players such as Rachel Keeling, Katie Bazyluk, Rachel Meltzer, Meredith Storm, Natalie Joslin, and Lindsey Chan. The coach also singled out the team's freshmen, including Rachel and Rebecca Natoli, Danielle Harkaway, Sarah Hainbach, Celcia Garrity, Maddie Huggonet, Jenn Dewey, Julie Michon, Katie Webster, Melissa Rivas, and Alicia Vieth for their polished play in their first-ever Barons game.

A determined B-CC defense rarely allowed the home team to cross the midfield line. Only in the last 10 minutes did Holton-Arms mount an aggressive offensive drive that challenged our defenders and tested the skills of goalie Lauren Serpan. But the stone wall held, and the shutout was preserved.
