First Semester
Students with no prior instrumental experience who wish to prepare
for enrollment in a school band should elect this course. They develop
basic instrumental skills through musical materials (from a variety
of countries, melodies of master composers, and contemporary popular
music). The cultural context of the music and its historical significance
are discussed as they relate to performance. The elements of musical
form, terms and symbols, tone production, instrument care and maintenance,
and the importance of effective and consistent practice habits are
presented. The development of technical skills necessary to perform
Grade I music is stressed.
Second Semester
Students continue to develop skills started in the first semester.
Instruction continues with emphasis upon preparing the student for
enrollment in a high school instrumental ensemble. The development
of technical skills necessary to perform Grade II music is stressed.
Public performances during and after school hours may be required
to meet course objectives.
