CHINESE LANGUAGE COMPETITIONAmalia Halikias, Dimitri Halikias and Juliet Anderson: won the first place in the Univ. of Maryland Chinese Language Competition. They won a fully paid trip to China for a week to compete with students from all over the world. April 2010.

Congratulations! Our very own Alex Doll has been named to the 2010 PARADE All-American High School Girls’ Soccer Team. Established in 1979, it is one of the most prestigious All-American designations that a high school athlete can achieve. The entire PARADE team was announced in the June 13, 2010 issue of the magazine, which can be found in last weekend’s Washington Post Newspaper.

Brandon Levy: A winner of the 2009 National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Awards in Writing
Chips also won the first place award from the National Council of Teachers of English and the first place award for the Maryland District Columbia Scholastic Press Association (all 2009).
Chips also earned the Silver Crown Award from Columbia Scholastic Press Association (2009) which distinguishes them as among the top 4% of literary arts magazines in the country.

Teena Thau (11th) took first place in the county in Persuasive Speaking.
Jerome Seagears was first team All-County in Basketball this year.
Nate Koenig was Honorable Mention.
Gideon Samson was named a POSSE Award winner this year and will be attending the University of Wisconsin at Madison for the next four years on a complete scholarship.
Naomi Roochnik was the winner of the Young Adult Essay writing contest sponsored by the Bethesda Literary Festival.
Brandon Levy and Kat Ignatova were honorable mentions.
Congratulations to the Science Team who won Second Place this year’s Physics Olympics competition at the University of Maryland. There were 14 teams there from as far away as Washington county (west), St Mary’s county (east), Baltimore county (north), and Alexandra (south). The best news is that none of these kids are seniors so we can firm the same team next year and go for first place! Special thanks to Bas Groenhuijsen for being team captain and making sure everyone made their competition times. Team members: Nicky Arva, Katherine Zhang, Gabor Nagy, Josh Bennett, Andrew Crouch, Jennifer R-A, Alex Rigaux, Adam Roggero, Alyssa Picard, Sarah Kogod, Mimi Ray and Bas Groehuijsen.
Fifth Annual Writing Contest Winners Are Announced:
The English Department wishes to congratulate the following students whose writing is being recognized in the Fifth Annual Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School Writing Contest, sponsored jointly by the Bethesda-Chevy Chase English Department, Chips (B-CC High School’s literary-art magazine), the Bethesda-Chevy Chase HS Educational Foundation and its Advisory Board, the Writer’s Center, and the Town of Chevy Chase.
First-place winners’ work will be published in the spring issue of Chips, Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School’s award-winning literary and creative arts magazine, in May 2009.

Seven MCPS high school seniors have been awarded Gates Millennium Scholarships. They are Macarena Torres-Girao and Kashira Turner, Watkins Mill; Yenia Cardozo Gomez, Bethesda Chevy Chase; Nyamagaga Gondwe, Rockville; Oscar Portillo, Wheaton; Ana Coello, Einstein; Nosheen Hayat, Kennedy. The scholarships provide financial support to minority students with significant financial need to enable them to complete an undergraduate college education. Congratulations to these students, their families, and their schools.

Newton Mathematics Competition, George Washington University, First Place
David Sangillo and Nathaniel Weinman, along with two members of the Whitman math team, tied for first place with Langley High School in the team component of the Newton Mathematics Competition at George Washington University on April 5. B-CC math teacher, Mr. Richard Smith, is the team's sponsor.
Arena Stage Student Playwrights Project Ten-Minute Play Competition
Sophomore Anthony Pape-Calabrese is one of ten winning entries among the nearly 700 original works submitted from students in 67 middle and high schools in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area this year. His ten-minute play, Off the Hinges, will be performed May 21 and 22, 2008 at 7:30pm, together with the other nine winning plays. Junior Lizzie Parmenter received an Honorable Mention for her play, The Best Man.
MCPS Environmental Film Fest, third place winner

Each student won a $100 scholarship to attend the American University School of Communication Summer Program.
2008 Dr. Marian Greenblatt Excellence in Teaching Award

Mr. Orlando is among three MCPS teachers recognized this year as a Master Teacher who inspires their students to achieve and who encourages younger teachers to be the best they can be. One of these teachers will be chosen as MCPS Teacher of the Year.
Washington Post Coach of the Year - Girls Track
Chad Young, B-CC Math Teacher and Track Coach
Young worked with a group of four young distance runners who performed beyond expectations all the way to the Maryland 3A title. (Washington Post 2008 All Mets)
Columbia Scholastic Press Association Gold Medalist Certificate
B-CC's literary arts magazine, Chips, has been awarded the 2007 Gold Medalist Certificate by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. It earned a total of 970 points out of 1000.
