Please note that questions
and answers particularly related to the Counseling Department
can be found on the Counseling
webpage. In addition, B-CC's
Freshman/New Parent Resource Guide includes information
on where to go for help on particular issues.
Q. How can I get a message
to my child?
A. If you think you are going to need to leave your child
a message, arrange to have your child call you during the
school day. Otherwise, messages to students should be for
emergency purposes only since any message given to a child
interrupts instruction. Please call the Main Office (240-497-6300)
and leave the message with one of the staff, and all efforts
will be made to deliver it to the student. Note that the
delivery of the message cannot be guaranteed.

Q. My child forgot lunch/lunch
money/homework - how can I get it to him/her?
A. At the beginning of the school year (and frequently thereafter!),
tell your child if he/she forgets homework, lunch, projects,
or anything else that he/she should check in the Main Office
between class or during lunch to see if the item has been
delivered. A student should not leave class to check unless
the teacher gives permission. It is the student's responsibility
to check for the item in the Main Office. Remember that
delivering notes or items into the classroom interrupts
instruction. Parents should deliver forgotten items to the
Main Office clearly labeled with the student's first and
last name.

Q. My child is coming in late/leaving
early - what do I do?
A. If a student arrives to school after 7:25am or leaves
before 2:10pm, he/she must sign in or out at the Attendance
Office. Late arrivals will be considered unexcused unless
a valid written excuse is presented. If a student needs
to leave before 2:10pm, he/she should bring a
note to the Attendance Office in advance. See “Attendance”
in the Student Handbook
for more information.

Q. How do I contact my child’s
teacher?
A. Sending an email message to that teacher is usually the
most efficient and timely way to contact teachers. See the
“Meet
the Teachers” webpage for a link to all teachers.
All teachers also have voicemail, but many teachers rely
on email. You can also call the Main Office (240-497-6300)
and ask for a message to be left in the teacher’s
mailbox.

Q. My child is having a problem
with his/her teacher – whom do I contact?
A. First, contact the teacher, by phone or email. The teacher
should be the first point of contact. If you need additional
help, contact the department
chair (Resource Teacher) for the particular subject.
If they cannot resolve the problem, contact the Assistant
Principal or Student Support Specialist responsible
for your child’s grade.

Q. What are Interims or
Progress Reports?
Interims and progress reports are one in the same. The purpose
of the interim/ progress report is to inform parents about
their child's academic progress in each subject area. The
interims/ progress reports are mailed out to all students
at the midpoint of each of the four marking periods. As
always, parents are encouraged to contact teachers with
questions and concerns regarding their child's performance.

Q. How can I find out about
homework in my child’s class?
A. A few teachers use online resources to post their homework
assignments. Go to the “Meet
the Teachers” webpage and click on your child’s
teacher to see if he or she lists a separate webpage for
homework assignments.

Q. My child is home sick. How
can I get his/her homework?
A. Parents or guardians should call the Attendance Office
(240-497-6309) any time after 7:00 a.m. on the day their
son/daughter is absent. For extended illness of five days
or more, parents/guardians should also call the Main Office
(240-497-6300) for assignments. Upon the student's return
to school, a written note prepared by the parent or guardian
explaining the absence must be submitted to the Attendance
Office. Otherwise, the absence will be considered unexcused.
See “Attendance” in the Student
Handbook for more information about attendance.

A. The absence note must contain: the date of the note;
student’s full name, grade level, and ID number; date(s)
and reason for absence; signature of parent/guardian; and
parent/guardian daytime telephone number. The form is available

absences”?
A. The State Board of Education recognizes the following
as excused absences: death in the immediate family, court
summons (proof required), suspension, state emergency, violent/hazardous
weather, illness (physician’s note required for 5
or more consecutive days), medical appointments, observance
of religious holidays, authorized activity approved in advance,
and lack of MCPS transportation. Juniors may have 2 days
and seniors may have 5 days to visit colleges with the submission
of a note with a parent/guardian signature within 3 days
of their return to school. See “Attendance”

Q. My child's bus didn't
come/was late.
A. Please call MCPS Bus Transportation at 301/469-1070.

Q. During final exams,
if my child does not have a final exam can he/she come in
late or leave early?
A. If a student does not have an exam, he or she is not
required to be in school during that exam period.
Q. What about bus transportation
during final exams?
A. Buses run at the regular times, morning and afternoon.
A student who does not have a morning exam and wants to
come to school late will need to find his or her own transportation
to school. A student who does not have an afternoon exam
and wants to leave early will need to find his or her own
transportation home. Students may also come to school at
the regular time and leave at the regular time even if they
do not have exams scheduled. Study halls are provided, in
the Media Center during exam times and in the Cafeteria
after exam times.

Q. How does my child
sign up for extracurricular activities?
A. Click here
for a list of extracurricular activities at B-CC. A student
interested in an activity can talk to the teacher who sponsors
the activity or come to any regularly scheduled meeting.
Participation in any extracurricular activity requires payment
of a fee to MCPS; waivers are available. Participation in
sports teams also requires a physical prior to beginning
practice. Click here
to get the forms you need.

Q. Does B-CC have a dress
code?
A. Yes. Students are expected to dress appropriately for
school and during all school events, including sporting
