The Barnsley Peace Program
The Rockville Cluster has been implementing a Peace Program for several years, and we continue this tradition at Barnsley. Our Peace Program includes monthly character themes, a Character Lottery, and Peace Days. Our goal is to create a respectful school community here at Barnsley.
Each character theme is announced at the beginning of the month and discussed during classroom meeting time. The monthly character themes are:
- September RESPECT
- October RESPONSIBILITY
- November GRATITUDE
- December COMPASSION
- January PERSEVERANCE
- February TOLERANCE
- March COOPERATION
- April COURAGE
- May CITIZENSHIP
- June PRIDE
The Barnsley Character Lottery includes nominating students (or classes) for demonstrating the character trait of the month. Anyone can nominate a student, and nominations are accepted continually, with names being drawn every Friday and shared on the announcements.
Peace Days are achieved school-wide when students remember to keep hands and feet to self and resolve conflicts peacefully. When we have earned 25 Peace Days, we will celebrate our accomplishment. Peace Days are announced at the end of each day by the principal and a tally is kept on the office bulletin board.
