August

Welcome

The main bulletin board shows a scattering of “welcome” in different languages.

September

Review

All grades

Introduce the new students to the program, refresh the children’s memories from the summer break.

October

Respect

School-wide “Recipe for Respect”

Once the excitement of back to school wears off, the children need to understand that the school rules are critical in keeping order in the playground, the classroom and in shared spaces.  Most important among those is respect for school, classmates, teacher and self.

November

Responsibility

Grade 1

As we move into the second quarter, students are more aware of their responsibilities as participants in their own education.

December

Fairness

Grade 4

Most cultures celebrate some version of a holiday festivity during this month.  Excitement and tension increase as the children approach the vacation period.  Thinking about fairness is timely.

January

Moral Courage

Grade 5

Moral Courage is one of the more complex values, and thus is undertaken by the older grades.

Martin Luther King Day and discussion of his actions are already incorporated in every grade level.

February

Caring

Grade 3

Linking caring to Valentines Day broadens the scope of the day and provides a natural theme for the bulletin Board while linking it to a non-denominational holiday that is enjoyed by virtually everyone.

March

Honesty

Grade 2

Standardized testing occurs for the most part in March and April.  Reinforcing honesty at this point will help the children consider their actions before taking a peek at another person’s test.

April

Co-operation

K

In anticipation of the Sports days that many schools hold in early June, May gives an advance opportunity to reinforce the important of co-operation play in our lives.

May

Citizenship  or Tolerance

All

Though these values were dropped from the cluster list, the committee has decided to continue to acknowledge the importance of both of these values during the free month.  We anticipate we will alternate annually between the two.  2010 will focus on Citizenship.
